The Mortgage Verifications team builds systems that lenders use to verify income and employment for millions of mortgage applicants annually. This work sits at the intersection of consumer data, regulated financial decisions, and ML/AI-driven automation. The team is mid-flight on a major evolution of verification products and next-generation prediction models.
As Engineering Manager, you will lead a team of approximately 8 engineers building this platform end-to-end—from APIs and integrations core to the platform, to AI/ML models powering verification decisions, to the customer-facing product experience. You will report to Mortgage engineering leadership with direct visibility to the executive team and partner closely with the product team to shape roadmap priorities. The decisions this team makes directly affect real people's ability to obtain mortgages, creating meaningful impact at scale.
Key responsibilities include:
- Own delivery and technical direction for the Mortgage Verifications team as the self-serve verification product scales through next launch phases
- Drive team-level AI adoption with real guardrails, baselines, and measured impact on shipping velocity
- Co-own product direction with your PM partner: shape problems, create alignment, and move beyond executing handed-off specs
- Lead the team through platform modernization while shipping new features in a highly regulated, high-stakes domain
- Manage production incidents as both technical lead and communication lead in a system where downtime has real business and consumer impact
- Grow engineers' careers, including building promotion cases and identifying career trajectories
- Hire senior and staff-level engineering talent to scale the team
- Represent team priorities and progress to product and executive stakeholders with data-backed impact claims
Checkr offers a hybrid work environment with hub locations in Denver, San Francisco, Nashville, and Santiago. Individuals are expected to work from the office 3+ days per week. In-office perks include lunch five times weekly, commuter stipend, and wellness amenities. A relocation stipend may be available for those relocating to a hub.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 4+ years as an engineering manager; 8+ years as an engineer
- Concrete track record of rolling out AI adoption across a team with guardrails and measured baselines (not just personal tool use)
- Quantitative fluency: ability to explain business-impact claims with methodology and baselines, not just metrics
- Demonstrated pattern of co-owning product direction—shaping problems and disagreeing productively with Product rather than executing specs
- Experience managing incidents in production systems at scale as both technical lead and communicator
- Experience working on regulated, high-stakes products where data accuracy and compliance matter (fintech, healthcare, identity, or similar); comfort with ambiguity valued over process maturity from large established orgs
- Strong system design and architecture judgment; comfortable making prioritization calls with incomplete information
- Track record of growing engineers and building inclusive, high-functioning teams
- Openness to feedback and genuine curiosity; willingness to learn alongside a fast-evolving team
- A-player mindset with strong bias for action: raises the bar, moves with urgency, stays resilient through ambiguity, takes ownership to deliver meaningful outcomes
