Hover is a property intelligence platform that uses proprietary AI and real property data to create fully measured, accurate, and interactive 3D models of properties from smartphone scans. The company serves homeowners, contractors, insurance professionals, and is backed by Google Ventures and Menlo Ventures.
You will lead Mobile Core, the mobile platform team responsible for reliability, performance, and developer experience for the Hover Pro app used by 300,000+ contractors and insurance professionals. This is a player-coach role on a React Native, Expo, and TypeScript stack where your technical decisions set the pace for all mobile teams.
Key responsibilities include:
- Own reliability and performance for the Hover Pro app, targeting 99.99% crash-free sessions and 99.99% upload success using Sentry fingerprinting, code-owner routing, and device-vitals dashboards
- Lead architecture decisions across React Native (New Architecture), Expo, TypeScript, and native iOS/Android, including migrating the core upload pipeline from React Native to native
- Improve CI/CD, release cadence, on-call processes, and old-version sunsetting to enable faster shipping across mobile teams
- Partner with mobile QA on testability improvements: dev tooling, debug menus, and hooks for AI-assisted end-to-end testing
- Steward shared foundations including the mobile design system, offline data layer, push notifications, iOS/Android readiness, and enterprise needs like Intune and accessibility
- Partner with the Capture SDK team on native SDK adoption and with backend teams on upload reliability over weak networks
Time allocation: approximately 50% design and code reviews/debugging/coding, 30% people leadership, 20% cross-team planning.
Requirements:
- Deep, hands-on experience shipping a React Native and TypeScript app in production at scale
- Experience leading engineers as an engineering manager or tech lead with people responsibilities (coaching, hiring, performance management)
- Native iOS and/or Android depth to make sound architectural calls at the boundary: native modules, camera and background tasks, OS lifecycle, app store releases
- Track record owning shared mobile foundations that other teams build on, including CI/CD, release management, and test automation (GitHub Actions, Maestro, Detox)
- Experience using Sentry, New Relic, or similar tools to drive down crash rates and prioritize data-driven improvements
- Practical use of AI-assisted development tools like Cursor or Claude, with experience helping teams adopt them
- Clear written communication across time zones and with non-engineering partners; ability to follow through on commitments
Nice-to-haves:
- Experience with camera, AR, LiDAR, or large media uploads, including integrating native SDKs into React Native
- Experience with offline-first sync (WatermelonDB, Apollo) or enterprise mobile needs (MDM/Intune, WCAG accessibility)
- Background in construction, insurance, or field-services software, or experience leading distributed or contractor teams
