Zoox is building advanced self-driving hardware and software solutions. The Embedded Robot Middleware (ERM) team provides reliable, performant, and extensible middleware frameworks for Zoox embedded systems, enabling firmware applications to build domain functionalities with ease and efficiency.
As Engineering Manager for Middleware Transport, you will lead a team of software engineers responsible for the company's messaging, in-vehicle network, and cloud connectivity infrastructure. You will own the team's roadmap, staffing, and release commitments while managing performance cycles, promotions, and hiring. You'll represent the team across cross-functional programs including firmware, product security, simulation, fleet operations, and infrastructure, building relationships that keep shared work moving.
Key responsibilities include setting the technical bar for the team, making architecture decisions that stick, and ensuring abstractions are ones other teams want to build on. You'll balance interrupt-driven reliability work against long-horizon architecture, being explicit with partners about tradeoffs. This role requires driving work that spans organizational boundaries where you don't control the people doing the work.
The role sits at the intersection of robotics, machine learning, and autonomous vehicle technology. You'll work with a fast-moving, execution-oriented team focused on bringing fully autonomous vehicle fleets to market.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in computer science, electrical/computer engineering, or equivalent experience
- 9+ years of software development experience, with 4+ years in a leadership role managing software engineers
- Strong grounding in at least one of: networked distributed systems, pub/sub and RPC middleware, vehicle or embedded networking, or transport protocols; enough depth to hold your own in design reviews
- Strong C++ programming experience with large code bases and technical dependencies
- Track record of driving work spanning organizational boundaries without controlling the people doing the work
BONUS QUALIFICATIONS:
- Robotics, automotive, aerospace, or other safety-relevant domain experience
- Hands-on experience with DDS, PTP and time synchronization, QUIC or multipath transport, or Ethernet switch configuration and diagnostics at fleet scale
- Experience building platform abstractions with internal customers, including migration and adoption
