Mariana Minerals is a software-first, vertically integrated minerals company reimagining the critical minerals supply chain through advanced software, automation, and data-driven decision-making. The company supports energy transition, AI, and defense technologies.
You will build and lead a team of software engineers working on MarianaOS, the operating system for how Mariana engineers, constructs, and operates its mines and mineral processing facilities. The software spans capital projects, plant operations, autonomous equipment, and data systems connecting them. Your users are project engineers, construction teams, and operators at the copper site in Moab, Utah and lithium facility in East Texas, creating an unusually short feedback loop where shipped work impacts ground operations within days.
As Engineering Manager, you own team performance and growth, including 1:1s, feedback, performance reviews, career development, hiring, compensation input and advocacy, and delivery against roadmap commitments. You'll partner closely with tech leads, senior engineers, and product managers. Tech leads and engineers own technical direction; product managers own priorities; you own the team—its growth, operations, and delivery reliability.
You're expected to stay technically engaged and contribute hands-on when highest-leverage, while prioritizing management-only work. Apply an engineering mindset to management itself: define and iterate on metrics for engineering performance, build tools and systems making those metrics useful, develop clarity on where work gets stuck, assess delivery reliability, identify where engineers need support, and spot process friction. As agentic tooling becomes more capable, actively explore how agents and automation improve management workflows—synthesizing context, surfacing risks and action items, increasing velocity.
The team moves quickly: engineers ship, get feedback from plant and job-site operators, and iterate. Creating conditions for that pace while preserving it as the team grows is central to this role.
Tech stack: TypeScript and React frontend, Node and Python services, Postgres, AWS, with growing LLM and agent tooling in production.
Key responsibilities: Build and lead the engineering team with full people management. Own the hiring funnel from sourcing through onboarding, shaping team skill mix and seniority. Deliver predictably against roadmap, giving Product a counterpart who can articulate what's technically possible, timelines, and schedule/reliability costs. Create conditions for rapid shipping and real-world iteration. Break down ambiguous problems, sequence work, keep team unblocked with appropriate planning cadence. Partner with Tech Lead and senior engineers on technical direction. Build resilience by growing engineers into larger scope, addressing morale and conflict early, reducing critical dependencies. Run review, documentation, and ownership practices ensuring work survives its creator.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 3–5+ years managing software engineers directly, including performance management, career development, and hiring
- 8+ years in software with technical depth to make sound tradeoffs alongside strong Tech Leads and senior engineers
- Ability to review designs or changes you didn't write, spot flaws, and give feedback that makes engineers better
- Track record of teams delivering predictably under real deadlines with estimates and commitments stakeholders trust
- Demonstrated success growing engineers through promotions, expanded scope, and increasing ownership
- Strong experience translating between non-technical stakeholders and engineering teams, communicating technical constraints clearly
- Bias toward shipping and learning from feedback rather than waiting for complete plans
- Experience bringing structure to ambiguous, fast-moving problems
- Startup experience in rapidly scaling company helpful but not required
- Experience in manufacturing, industrial automation, mining, or capital projects beneficial but not required
