NerdWallet is seeking a hands-on Engineering Manager to lead the Consumer Credit Cards Marketplaces team. This role combines technical leadership with people management for a team of 3-4 engineers building high-traffic web shopping experiences that serve millions of users making real financial decisions. You will own both technical direction and people outcomes, driving architecture and technical decisions while managing 1-on-1s, career development, and performance management. The team works across a modern full-stack: Next.js and React on the frontend, GraphQL federation and Node.js services on the backend, deployed on edge infrastructure. Page performance and Core Web Vitals directly impact rankings, conversion, and revenue, making technical work highly visible and measurable. Key responsibilities include: owning technical direction and people outcomes; driving architecture, planning, and milestones; building and evolving the team's AI developer harness and orchestrating agentic automations across the software lifecycle; developing engineers' AI-era skills (prompting, spec-writing, code review); managing performance and growth; partnering with engineering leadership on technical initiatives; contributing to platform stability and incident management; and maintaining high standards of technical excellence. You will collaborate closely with SEO strategists, Paid Marketers, Product, Business Development, and Data & Analytics teams, focusing efforts on growing the business rather than engineering for its own sake. The role reports to the Head of Engineering for Consumer Banking, Credit Cards & New Markets. REQUIREMENTS: - 8+ years in software engineering with strong background as a hands-on Technical Lead - Expertise in TypeScript, React, and Node.js, with experience in additional modern languages - Strong experience with modern front-end frameworks (Next.js, React.js), understanding of web performance, Core Web Vitals, and technical SEO - Experience architecting and building back-end APIs and microservices (scalability, performance, data integrity) - Strong understanding of database systems (SQL and NoSQL), experience with high-volume data processing - Experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP, or Azure), CI/CD pipelines, containerization, Docker, Kubernetes - Knowledge of security and compliance best practices in financial services - Experience with observability and running production applications at scale, especially marketplaces - Hands-on experience with AI development tools and advanced AI-enabled workflows (development harness, agentic automations, spec-driven development) PREFERRED: - Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent practical experience) - Experience integrating Machine Learning systems, personalization pipelines, data-driven experimentation - Domain knowledge in finance and shopping marketplaces - Understanding of accessibility best practices and usability/UX - Familiarity with paid and organic search strategies and engineering impact on business outcomes
