Mercury is a fintech platform providing banking, treasury, and financial workflow solutions for startups and technology companies. The Bank Accounts team builds the foundation for depository accounts—managing money held in Mercury accounts and enabling customers to move money between their own accounts. As Mercury opens its own bank, this team will build critical infrastructure to manage customer accounts at scale, supporting account opening, usage, management, and inter-account transfers. As Engineering Manager for the Bank Accounts team, you will lead a team of 4–8 senior engineers delivering high-availability banking services. Your responsibilities include: • Leading the technical team to deliver reliable, scalable banking infrastructure • Translating company and product direction into clear, measurable team objectives • Building predictable delivery systems that make progress, risks, and tradeoffs visible • Balancing customer-facing improvements with platform reliability, operational readiness, and long-term maintainability • Partnering across Product, Design, Risk, Compliance, and Operations to ensure Mercury's banking products are reliable, understandable, and useful • Hiring, onboarding, and developing engineers while maintaining a consistent, high-quality interview process • Ensuring responsible use of AI-assisted development with appropriate testing, evaluation, review, and production safeguards • Providing clear, useful feedback to engineers at all levels • Creating an environment where engineers can do their best work and grow technically and as leaders Your role is to make Mercury's banking core run so smoothly that customers barely notice it's there. REQUIREMENTS: • Demonstrated ability to lead a technical team • Experience building or operating reliable financial, banking, payments, or other high-integrity systems • Comfort working across product, policy, infrastructure, and operational boundaries • Ability to turn ambiguous problems into clear decisions, owners, and execution plans • Strong technical judgment and ability to engage deeply with system design and implementation • Experience developing senior engineers and creating opportunities for engineers to lead • Deep care for correctness, reliability, customer experience, and operational excellence • Familiarity with Haskell and TypeScript, or willingness to learn them
