Nametag is building the future of secure digital identity, enabling people and organizations to prove who they are online safely and seamlessly. The company helps enterprises reduce fraud, streamline onboarding, and deliver secure user experiences through next-generation identity verification and account protection.
You will lead Nametag's engineering team as a player-coach manager, owning how the team plans, ships, operates, and grows. This role manages a group of staff- and senior-level engineers working across a Go backend on AWS, React/TypeScript frontend, native mobile clients, and ML systems for fraud detection. You will not write most of the code but must be able to read it, review it, and hold credible opinions in design discussions. The team is experienced and autonomous; they need a manager who removes obstacles and raises the bar.
Key responsibilities include:
**Lead the team**: Manage, coach, and grow senior and staff engineers through regular 1:1s, feedback, performance reviews, and promotion decisions. Set clear expectations, address problems early, and protect both team focus and standards. Develop people deliberately through career paths and stretch work.
**Own delivery**: Run planning and execution so the team ships predictably with clear scope and visible progress. Make and communicate tradeoffs between speed, quality, and scope. Unblock work by escalating appropriately and absorbing obstacles.
**Own operational health**: Be accountable for reliability, on-call, and incident response. Drive postmortems that change processes. Keep security and compliance (SOC 2, secure development lifecycle) as part of normal engineering work.
**Partner across the company**: Work with product and design to turn roadmaps into buildable plans. Represent engineering to customers, prospects, and executives in technical conversations. Translate between customer needs and architectural constraints.
**Hire and build the org**: Own engineering hiring including sourcing, interview design, calibration, and closing. Design team structure and ownership boundaries as the org grows.
**Shape engineering standards**: Set and enforce code review, testing, deployment, documentation, and architectural decision-making standards. Define how the team uses AI tooling responsibly. Make the build, test, and deploy path trustworthy.
As a security company, failure modes are adversarial, not accidental. Reliability and secure-by-default engineering are not delegated. The org is AI-native; engineers work with coding agents daily, and you'll shape how the team operates productively in that environment.
The title flexes with experience. Candidates who have run engineering organizations before—owning hiring, structure, and technical strategy across multiple teams—may be considered for a Head of Engineering role.
**Requirements:**
- 3+ years managing software engineers, including senior and staff-level individual contributors, with a track record of shipping production systems
- Strong engineering background: you've built and operated backend or distributed systems at scale and can hold your own in design reviews
- Experience owning delivery for a team: planning, prioritization, and accountability for outcomes rather than activity
- Experience running on-call and incident response for production systems with real availability expectations
- Demonstrated hiring success: you've built an interview process, not just sat on panels
- Comfort operating at startup scope: ambiguous problems, shifting priorities, and no one else to hand hard things to
- Strong written communication (remote-first environment)
- Work authorization required: must be legally authorized to work in the United States without current or future visa sponsorship need
**Bonus qualifications:**
- Experience in security, identity, fraud, or infrastructure-adjacent B2B SaaS
- Experience with Go, AWS, and services architecture
- Experience scaling an engineering org through growth stage (adding teams, layers, or second manager)
- Experience with SOC 2 or similar compliance regimes as an engineering leader
- Informed point of view on how AI coding tools change engineering process and quality
