Great Question is an end-to-end agentic user research platform trusted by leading companies like Gusto, Experian, Canva, and Brex. The company raised a $13M Series A and went through YC in 2021. They are rebuilding core product components agent-first and growing the engineering team accordingly.
As Engineering Manager, you will lead the Methods and Insights teams, reporting to the Director of Engineering. These are pillar teams behind most of the product: Methods powers every study and participant experience; Insights helps customers make sense of data and act on it.
The role has three core components:
**People Management**: Hiring and staffing, 1:1s, coaching, feedback, performance management, and growth. You are trusted by your engineers to give direct feedback and push hard for their development.
**Delivery & Operations**: Run planning and sequencing cycles, unblock work, manage risk, work with stakeholders, and lead operational evolution. You ensure committed work ships at high quality and own team health post-launch, including monitoring and red-teaming.
**Building the Factory**: Help establish systems, conventions, CI gates, and shared components that enable agents to do good work quickly and reliably. This includes shared components, agent harness improvements, and developer experience enhancements—not feature work.
You will work closely with PMs, the Head of Product, and founders on team priorities and own how those bets translate into shipped work.
The company culture emphasizes high trust, high agency, and high emotional intelligence. Engineers are encouraged to lean into AI to multiply creativity, speed, and scale. The engineering approach is light on ceremony but high on accountability and communication. Main goes to production with fast, automated CI as the gate. The codebase is designed for easy navigation with written runbooks and conventions. Sandboxed and preview environments are trivial to spawn, and the team has access to latest tools and models with generous token allocation.
In your first 90 days, you will conduct 1:1s with every engineer, learn the codebase and merge your first PR, understand each engineer's growth trajectory and delivery risks, take over team rhythms, ship something alongside the team, fix planning/execution processes with PMs, ship developer-experience improvements, and establish predictable shipping with growing engineers.
**Requirements**:
- This is not your first EM role; you have hired, run performance cycles, and grown people into bigger scope.
- Technically strong: at least a solid senior engineer by their bar. You have built and run production systems and the engineers you lead respect you because you've done the work.
- Live in an agentic coding harness (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, etc.) with real opinions on how teams should work with agents to ship fast without quality loss.
- Resourceful under ambiguity; you add just enough process to keep teams unblocked, no more.
- Close to the product; you care whether what shipped actually worked for customers.
- Write clearly; remote and async-heavy communication requires clear thinking and prompting.
- You manage people, not tickets, and know what each engineer is trying to grow into.
- You have system design chops to help engineers through hard design problems and spot when estimates or blockers don't hold up.
- You are all-in on AI and understand that moving fast means maintaining a high technical and quality bar.
- You thrive in ambiguity and shifting priorities.
