Courier Health is a NYC-based healthtech company building patient engagement software for life sciences companies. The platform helps biopharma companies support patients with chronic and rare diseases from diagnosis through therapy initiation and adherence. The company recently raised a $50M Series B and grew customer and therapy volume by over 400% year-over-year.
You will lead a team of 4-7 engineers owning one core product area: AI intake agents, core data, integrations, patient services, field access, or workflows. You'll report to the Director of Engineering, partner with a dedicated Product Manager, and own your team's planning, shipping, operations, and growth.
This is a management role focused on team delivery and engineer development. You'll be technical enough to review designs, unblock engineers, and work incidents, but your primary measure is what your team delivers and how much your engineers improve.
Key responsibilities include: running your team's operating rhythm (sprint planning, estimation, demos, retros) and ensuring delivery predictability; hiring for your team from sourcing through close; providing direct feedback, running career ladder reviews, promoting high performers, and addressing performance gaps; owning system reliability for HIPAA and SOC 2 Type II compliant healthcare systems where data errors directly impact patient care; partnering with Product to share the roadmap and make explicit trade-offs between scope and capacity; and leading your team's adoption of AI coding tools to improve both speed and quality.
The company is office-first, requiring 4+ days per week in the Nomad office in NYC for in-person collaboration.
Requirements:
- 2+ years as an engineering manager in current or most recent role, leading 4-7 direct reports
- 10+ years in software engineering overall; came up as a senior engineer and remain technically credible (review designs/code, unblock engineers, join incidents)
- Full people management experience: hired onto own team, delivered hard feedback, managed underperformers, promoted high performers
- Established team rituals (planning, estimation, retros, on-call), not just inherited them
- Shipped end-to-end with Product partners and can quantify outcomes (cycle time, incident rate, delivery predictability)
- Approach failures as learning opportunities, not blame exercises
- Experience leading teams on production cloud systems; stack is TypeScript/Node, React, GraphQL, AWS (Serverless), PostgreSQL
- Based in New York and available in office 4+ days per week
Bonus experience:
- Healthcare or regulated environment experience (HIPAA, SOC 2)
- Led teams through rapid growth at early-stage companies
- Shipped LLM-powered or agentic features to production, or led team adoption of agentic coding tools
- Enterprise B2B products with heavy data integration (APIs, SFTP, HL7, FHIR, EDI)
