Altana is building an AI-powered product network that empowers governments and businesses to create a more resilient and secure global economy. The Engineering organization is responsible for building the platform that brings this vision to life—a complex system fundamentally driven by AI, scaling to massive data volumes and a diverse customer base. As an Engineering Manager at Altana, you will build and lead a team of engineers shipping products customers rely on. You'll embed closely with product and design, turning hypotheses about customer pain points into shipped, adopted products. Your success is measured by the value your team delivers to customers, how quickly and steadily it ships, and how well systems hold up as output grows. Key responsibilities include: - Building the team and helping each person grow through end-to-end performance management, using career goals to shape work assignments - Staying close to customers and bringing your team with you—attending customer calls, reviewing session recordings, and ensuring engineers see customer problems firsthand - Holding the bar on solving the right problem by partnering with product and design to define problems before choosing solutions - Keeping your hands in the work by contributing meaningful code, knowing your domain's architecture and tech debt, and setting quality standards - Building AI-native systems, treating LLMs, agents, evals, and retrieval as standard building blocks, with clear standards for AI-assisted code verification - Making commitments the team keeps through realistic planning, early risk flagging, and consistent delivery - Making the team faster over time by using engineering metrics to find and remove bottlenecks - Owning operations end-to-end: keeping incidents rare, sharing on-call load fairly, treating cost as a design input, and working with security - Creating a team culture that handles ambiguity well and makes everyone feel safe sharing ideas The role is based in Brooklyn, NY with hybrid work flexibility. Candidates must be within commuting distance of the Williamsburg, Brooklyn office. Requirements: - Real-world professional experience writing back-end or data-driven software in demanding environments - Strong hands-on engineering skills: you've deployed production code to cloud environments and can ship work you're proud of; demonstrated experience with large, complex problems - Experience leading a team as an engineering manager or tech lead with real people responsibilities (coaching, feedback, hiring) - Track record of staying close to customers, turning their problems into well-scoped, shipped work, and delivering incremental releases from prototype to production - Experience running planning and delivery for a team that consistently hits commitments - Comfort owning operations, including incidents, on-call, and system cost - Strong written and verbal communication skills and good judgment about when to handle something yourself versus escalate Nice to have: - Experience building production systems with LLMs, agents, evals, or retrieval - Experience using engineering metrics such as DORA or SPACE to improve team performance - Background in trade, supply chain, compliance, or working with government customers
