Salary: USD 220,000 - 300,000 / annual
General Matter enriches uranium and is building the world's lowest-cost nuclear fuel enrichment services in the US. The Applied AI team embeds with engineering teams across the company to accelerate critical-path work: nuclear licensing, integrated safety analysis, design criteria, and technoeconomic modeling. The team identifies bottlenecks in existing engineering workflows and builds AI-driven tools to make them significantly faster. This role offers the opportunity to define what AI-first engineering looks like at a nuclear company, challenging decades-old assumptions about what requires PhD specialists, how long analysis takes, and which processes must remain manual.
As Engineering Manager of Applied AI, you will lead and grow the team, own technical direction and prioritization, stay hands-on with architecture and implementation, and partner directly with licensing, safety, design, manufacturing, and other technical teams to identify AI-leverage opportunities. You will establish scalable engineering practices for project selection, prototyping, evaluation, and production handoff, and represent the Applied AI function across company leadership and cross-functional partners.
The role is based in Los Angeles and requires ability to work extended hours and weekends as necessary.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Basic Requirements:
- 7+ years of professional software engineering or applied AI experience
- 2+ years of experience managing, mentoring, or growing software or applied AI engineers
- Demonstrated experience building and shipping software using LLMs, AI agents, or other modern AI techniques
- Strong software engineering fundamentals and proficiency in Python
- BS or higher in engineering, physics, chemistry, applied math, computer science, or related technical field
Preferred Skills and Experience:
- Technical leader who still codes: comfortable reviewing PRs, debating architecture, and solving difficult technical problems hands-on
- AI fluency: hands-on experience with LLMs, RAG, tool-use architectures, and AI agents; critical thinking about where AI creates meaningful leverage
- Strong engineering judgment: ability to quickly understand technical problems across disciplines and evaluate team approaches without being the domain expert
- Workflow-oriented mindset: excited by fundamentally improving how engineering teams work, not just adding AI to existing processes
- Builds high-agency teams: hires and develops engineers who take ownership, move quickly, and solve problems autonomously
- Experience scaling small teams: has helped high-context engineering teams add structure and process while preserving speed, autonomy, and technical quality
