You will lead a small but high-impact engineering team building the systems behind finance and internal operations—billing, invoicing, and the internal tools used daily by Operations and Finance teams. This is a hands-on manager role where quality and good judgment are critical; mistakes here are expensive.
As Engineering Lead, you own the people, team processes, and roadmap delivery. You report to the Engineering Manager and work closely with the team's Product Manager and senior leadership. Approximately 30–40% of your time is spent on code reviews, technical design, and hands-on engineering work.
Key responsibilities:
- Lead and develop engineers through 1:1s, feedback, and growth plans
- Set performance standards and address gaps early
- Own roadmap delivery; maintain visibility on progress, risks, and blockers
- Collaborate with Product, Operations, and Finance on roadmap planning and quarterly goals
- Facilitate planning, refinement, and retrospectives; represent the team cross-functionally
- Maintain high standards for code review, testing, monitoring, security, and incident follow-up
- Hire new engineers for the team
- Establish good practices for AI tool adoption in development
The team works with a modern web stack: Laravel (PHP), Node.js, React, Filament, and MySQL. You'll deliver B2B web products end-to-end, collaborating with non-technical stakeholders.
Work arrangement: Hybrid in Amsterdam (2–3 days/week in office) or fully remote elsewhere in EMEA with CET-overlapping hours and occasional Amsterdam visits.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 5+ years as a software engineer, including 1–2 years managing engineers with direct reports
- Experience handling performance issues: setting expectations, giving difficult feedback, supporting struggling team members
- Leadership style that flexibly switches between directing and coaching
- Ability to explain and defend viewpoints to senior stakeholders
- Hands-on experience with modern web stack (Laravel, Node.js, React, Filament, MySQL); strong engineers learn quickly
- Track record delivering B2B web products end-to-end with non-technical colleagues
- Daily use of AI tools in development work
- Fluent written and spoken English (Dutch not required)
NICE TO HAVE:
- FinTech experience or background with finance/billing systems (invoicing, order-to-cash, tax, accounting, ERP integrations like Exact or QuickBooks)
- Experience with Laravel Filament or other admin panel tools, or migrating internal tools from low-code platforms like Retool
- Experience building LLM features or AI agents for internal operations
- Scale-up experience, ideally in B2B SaaS, logistics, or operations
