Salary: USD 399,420 - 457,970 / annual
Roblox is a platform serving tens of millions of daily active users, with record concurrent player counts exceeding 45 million. The company is seeking a Director of Engineering to own the technical strategy, design, delivery, and operation of Roblox's storage systems infrastructure.
In this role, you will be responsible for the complete technical vision and execution of storage systems supporting nearly 1 exabyte of data today, scaling to multi-exabyte deployments. You will own distributed databases, caches, queues, object storage, and encryption infrastructure. The infrastructure spans both on-premises and cloud environments, with significant custom-built components.
Key responsibilities include:
- Owning technical strategy, architecture, and roadmap for all storage systems
- Ensuring storage platform scales by orders of magnitude while maintaining reliability and efficiency
- Partnering with Data Platform, Infrastructure, and product engineering teams to align storage capabilities with business needs
- Building, growing, and retaining a world-class storage engineering team and developing next-generation technical leaders
- Driving operational excellence through reliability standards, on-call practices, and incident response protocols
- End-to-end ownership of systems, including participation in on-call rotation for critical incidents
The role emphasizes reliability as the primary feature of any system, with deep focus on serving both internal and external customers. You will shepherd the platform through significant growth to support emerging AI workloads at scale.
Workplace arrangement: Onsite Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at San Mateo headquarters, with optional presence Monday and Friday.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related technical field
- 10+ years in storage, infrastructure, or distributed systems roles, including hands-on experience building and operating custom database systems (not just deploying off-the-shelf solutions)
- Depth in multiple areas: caching systems, object storage, message queues, or data streaming
- 5+ years in engineering leadership, managing teams through ambiguity to deliver critical, production-scale systems
- Track record of building reliable, high-availability systems at significant scale (millions of users, petabyte-scale data, or equivalent)
- Strong operational instincts with demonstrated ability to raise the bar on reliability and execution
- Proven ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional partners and earn trust across engineering, product, and leadership
- Comfort with ambiguity and bias toward learning; ability to go deep on unfamiliar tech stacks and bring others along
