Swarm Aero is building the world's largest swarming UAV system and Command & Control software to mobilize thousands of heterogeneous autonomous assets. The company is composed of experienced aerospace engineers from Scaled Composites, Airbus, Archer Aviation, Blue Origin, and Boom Supersonic, and is moving quickly to launch the first aircraft designed specifically for swarming.
You will join the avionics team as an experienced Embedded Software Engineer responsible for extending a real-time avionics system that already runs on aircraft hardware. This is safety-critical software that directly controls flight systems, and the role involves continuous capability expansion across new sensors, payloads, and networking functions.
Key responsibilities include:
- Extending avionics, autonomy, and ground control software for large uncrewed aircraft, adding capability to an existing system
- Designing, integrating, and supporting embedded systems in real-time and non-real-time environments, both ground and airborne
- Bringing up new sensors, payloads, and networking capabilities on existing avionics hardware
- Building SIL (Software-in-the-Loop) and HIL (Hardware-in-the-Loop) test architecture to verify new functions before flight testing
- Developing simulation models and verifying software components
- Owning software end-to-end: hardware bring-up, integration, test, and field troubleshooting on actual vehicles

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret security clearance and meet ITAR requirements (U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, or eligible for State Department authorization).
REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field
- 3+ years of experience in embedded systems development, preferably in aerospace
- Proficiency in C/C++ programming; assembly language experience a plus
- Strong understanding of microcontroller and microprocessor architectures
- Experience with RTOS (FreeRTOS, VxWorks, or similar)
- Familiarity with hardware design and development tools (oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, JTAG debuggers)
- Knowledge of aerospace standards and protocols (DO-178C, ARINC, MIL-STD)
- Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
PREFERRED:
- Experience with model-based design tools (MATLAB/Simulink)
- Knowledge of safety-critical software development and certification processes
- Understanding of cybersecurity principles for embedded systems
- Familiarity with major microcontroller or microprocessor families
- Experience in robotics and automation (virtual, terrestrial, or aerial)
- Familiarity with network routing and switching
- Experience with Modular Open-Source Architecture components
- Experience with hardware security modules
