Salary: USD 144,020 - 184,026 / annual
Varda Space Industries is building commercial space infrastructure, including in-orbit pharmaceutical processing systems, reentry capsules, and satellite buses. The company designs, manufactures, and operates these systems in-house, with leadership and engineering talent from SpaceX, Blue Origin, and major pharmaceutical companies.
The Embedded Linux Engineer II – Flight role is responsible for developing reliable flight software that determines how Varda's spacecraft, satellite bus, and reentry capsule operate throughout their entire mission lifecycle. You will own all aspects of software development from requirements capture and design through testing, integration, and flight operational support.
Key responsibilities include:
- Develop reliable, mission-critical flight software for spacecraft and reentry systems
- Write quality structured bare metal, RTOS, or Linux-based software for embedded processors in C++
- Own complete software development lifecycle: design, testing, and integration
- Scope projects, capture requirements, and conduct initial design trades for open-ended problems
- Ensure system quality and performance through comprehensive software test, verification, and validation (V&V) techniques
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to solve complex problems
This is an on-site role in El Segundo, CA, where Varda operates its primary production facility. The company also has offices in Washington, DC and Huntsville, AL.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Basic Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, mathematics, physics, engineering, or equivalent technical experience in safety-critical software
- 3+ years of experience developing spacecraft or similar safety-critical software
- Strong proficiency in C++ with deep understanding of language concepts
Preferred Skills and Experience:
- End-to-end experience building and launching a spacecraft
- Experience developing and testing real-time embedded systems
- Experience with safety-critical software, especially for aerospace applications
- Experience with CCSDS telemetry and telecommand systems
- Experience with F' or cFS framework
- Proficiency in Python or Rust
- Knowledge of basic analog and digital electronics
- Familiarity with SPI, I2C, CAN, or EtherCAT protocols
ITAR Requirement: Must be a U.S. person (U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, or individual admitted as refugee/granted asylum) due to access to export-controlled technology.
