Fuse Energy is a well-funded energy startup ($200M+ raised from top-tier investors including Balderton, Accel, Lowerstar, and others) building an integrated energy company that develops solar, batteries, grid infrastructure, and distributed energy systems. The company combines first-principles thinking with cutting-edge technology to make energy abundant and affordable, operating as an Independent Connections Provider (ICP) with NERS accreditation.
The Electrical Engineering Lead owns all electrical engineering for Fuse's EPC (Engineering, Procurement, Construction) function across infrastructure projects including Solar PV, BESS, Wind, Gas-Peak, and Data Centres. This is a senior technical and people leadership role reporting to the EPC leadership team.
Key Responsibilities:
Electrical Leadership & Design: Lead all electrical engineering from early design through construction, commissioning, and energisation. Serve as the HV/MV subject matter expert across all infrastructure projects, covering substations, grid connections, transformers, switchgear, protection systems, and cable networks. Set electrical design standards and review/approve designs from internal engineers, design partners, and consultants. Provide technical challenge to drive safe, compliant, and cost-effective solutions.
Team Leadership: Lead, develop, and manage Electrical Design Engineers, Electrical Engineers, SAPs (Senior Authorised Persons), and Commissioning Engineers. Allocate resources across projects and build team competence against NERS and DNO requirements. Raise the standard of design, safety, and delivery across the function.
NERS & ICP Compliance: Fulfil your NERS role within Fuse's accreditation. Ensure all works stay within Fuse's accredited scope. Support NERS and DNO audits and maintain technical records and evidence that accreditation relies on. Work with other NERS role holders to ensure end-to-end framework coverage.
Grid Connection & Standards: Lead technical review of grid connection agreements and compliance requirements. Ensure adherence to UK Grid Code, DNO/TSO requirements, G99/G100, and relevant standards. Oversee and validate grid studies (fault level, load flow, protection coordination, harmonic analysis). Act as technical interface with DNOs, TSOs, and third-party ICPs.
Construction, Testing & Commissioning: Lead HV/MV installation oversight, testing, commissioning, and energisation. Witness and sign off key testing. Lead energisation planning and execution. Troubleshoot electrical issues during construction and early operation. Ensure as-built systems comply with approved designs and grid requirements.
Delivery & Stakeholder Management: Respond to RFIs, TQs, and design clarifications. Support handover to Asset Management. Support technical due diligence and lender advisor requirements. Work closely with Development, Construction, and Asset Management teams. Act as escalation point for complex electrical technical issues.
Requirements:
- 8 to 10+ years in HV/MV electrical engineering within power, utilities, distribution, or renewable energy
- Current NERS authorisation as Authorising Officer, Technical Advisor, or Qualified Supervisor
- Experience leading and developing engineers, SAPs, and commissioning teams
- Chartered status (CEng, MIET) or HV Senior Authorised Person background (preferred)
- Exposure to wind, gas-peaking, or data centre electrical systems; DNO or IDNO experience (preferred)
- Deep experience of substations, protection systems, cable networks, and grid connection design
- Strong knowledge of UK grid standards and processes: DNO/TSO, Grid Code, G99/G100
- Experience reviewing grid studies (load flow, fault level, protection coordination, power quality)
- Hands-on HV commissioning, testing, and energisation experience
- Ability to challenge EPC and consultant designs with evidence
- Strong command of electrical safety regulations and compliance frameworks
- Experience on utility-scale Solar PV, BESS, or grid infrastructure projects
