xAI is seeking an Electrical Engineer to join its Memphis-area team designing and optimizing on-site power generation for high-density AI supercomputing facilities. This is a full-time, hands-on engineering role focused on plant electrical systems for gas turbine generation.
You will own the complete electrical architecture for on-site power plants, including generator design, excitation and synchronization systems, 34.5 kV collection and export infrastructure, protection and control systems, e-houses, blackstart capability, and medium-voltage switching. Your responsibilities span the full lifecycle: detailed engineering (single-line diagrams, protection schematics, relay settings), power system analysis (load flow, short circuit, arc flash, transient stability, harmonics using tools like ETAP or PSS/E), equipment specification and vendor selection, factory testing, site commissioning, and energization.
You will serve as the switching authority for plant electrical systems, manage isolation and clearance procedures, and ensure compliance with NERC, ERCOT, IEEE, NEC, NFPA, and UL standards. You'll conduct failure mode analysis and root cause investigations to achieve extreme uptime targets, and collaborate across electrical, mechanical, power systems, and construction teams on new facility builds and capacity expansions.
The role requires hands-on work in all environments (heat, cold, rain, tight quarters, heights), extended hours and weekend availability, focus in hazardous environments with PPE, ability to lift 25 lbs, and up to 50% travel. A valid driver's license is required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Basic: Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, physics, or electrical engineering technology.
Preferred: Experience with gas turbine generators, excitation, synchronization, islanded operation, and blackstart; ownership of plant electrical systems including 34.5 kV collect/export, protection, e-houses, and switching authority; background with data centers, hyperscale facilities, or large on-site power infrastructure (>50 MW); knowledge of ERCOT and NERC reliability standards; experience supporting construction, commissioning, and operations of power systems; track record of innovation or high-impact delivery in power infrastructure projects.
