Modern Intelligence builds Sovereign, targeting software for unmanned systems (UAVs, USVs, UUVs, and other unmanned vehicles). The software runs on the vehicle's onboard computer, detecting, classifying, and tracking targets from cameras, maintaining identity through signal disruption, and enabling terminal guidance. It operates reliably without GPS and under radio jamming conditions. The company has held Department of War contracts including work with Air Force Special Operations and SOCOM, and has raised over $12 million from investors including Bedrock, Vine, Contrary, and Air Street.
You will be responsible for maintaining a highly heterogeneous fleet of drones from multiple manufacturers while playing a key role in integrating and evaluating autonomy software on new platforms. You will solve problems across flight controllers, electrical systems, and physical drone components. This is hands-on engineering work requiring both building and flying drones across diverse configurations and manufacturers.
The company is open to alternative titles (Aerospace Engineer, Mechanical Engineer, Electrical Engineer) based on candidate background.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Experience with both fixed-wing and multicopter-style drones
- Direct hands-on experience with ArduPilot or Betaflight flight control software
- Willingness to relocate to Austin, Texas
- Willingness to travel
- Must be a U.S. person (U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, or other protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3)) — this role involves export-controlled technology
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience with both ArduPilot and Betaflight, including ELRS/CRSF radio links
- Experience with unconventional drone configurations (tail sitters, VTOL, etc.)
- Experience with UGVs and USVs
- Has built custom drones from scratch
- CAD and 3D printing experience
- Degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science (or equivalent)
NICE TO HAVE:
- PX4 flight control experience
- Autonomy software experience
- Willingness to travel to Ukraine
