Salary: USD 168,000 - 285,600 / annual
GitLab is seeking a Director of Strategic Finance to own complex, company-wide financial problems and translate long-range strategy into actionable financial choices. You will join a small, senior Strategic Finance & BizOps team and work with significant autonomy to solve ambiguous, cross-functional challenges.
Key responsibilities include:
- Translating GitLab's long-range strategy into financial scenarios, capacity plans, and investment choices that inform the annual operating plan
- Owning company-wide initiatives (e.g., sales and engineering capacity, hosting costs, product pricing) from problem definition through execution and handoff to permanent owners
- Building and evolving pricing, packaging, and discounting frameworks using unit economics and market context; providing Sales with practical tools including recommended deal structures and escalation paths
- Partnering with Deal Desk to model non-standard and enterprise deals, advising on financial terms and trade-offs for large, multi-year, usage-based, and partner-led agreements
- Designing dashboards, budget unlocks, and investment gates that enable operators to act independently within clear guardrails
- Working across Finance, Sales, Product, Engineering, and Data to solve cross-functional problems
- Building analytical and modeling capability for executive decisions; moving beyond requested analysis to proactive, prioritized recommendations for the CEO, CFO, and senior leadership
- Using AI and automation to reduce manual data preparation and expand team capacity for insight and execution
Strategic Finance is GitLab's cross-functional problem-solving and incubation team, taking on the CFO's and CEO's hardest, most ambiguous problems when no natural owner yet has the capability to solve them. The team builds financial and operating frameworks, brings together relevant functions, and transfers ongoing ownership to the right business-partner team. Current portfolio spans company-wide resource allocation and long-range planning, sales and engineering capacity, product pricing, discounting and deal structure, and hosting cost strategy.
Requirements:
- 10+ years of experience as an investor, banker, consultant, strategic finance leader, chief of staff, or operator in a complex technology or software business
- Demonstrated ownership of ambiguous, cross-functional problems such as pricing, deal desk, capacity planning, or strategic planning
- Ability to build complex, flexible financial models from scratch, including capacity plans, unit economics, pricing scenarios, and deal economics, and translate detail into executive-level recommendations
- Strategic financial judgment connecting operational choices to growth, gross margin, cash flow, profitability, return on invested capital, and opportunity cost
- Track record of influencing Product, go-to-market, or executive decisions through quantitative analysis
- Experience shaping pricing, packaging, or deal-structure decisions using unit economics; experience with consumption-based or hybrid pricing is particularly helpful
- Comfort working in changing environments where data and processes are incomplete; ability to build frameworks rather than only administer established processes
- Ability to represent the team credibly in senior forums, hold a point of view, and challenge weak assumptions constructively
- Practical, hands-on use of AI to automate workflows, prototype tools, and scale output; expertise in Google Sheets and ability to use GitLab
