ServiceNow is seeking a Director of Engineering to lead the HR Service Delivery (HRSD) engineering organization. This is a strategic leadership role focused on building a new operational model where smaller, AI-enabled teams deliver greater impact through automation and intelligent workflows.
The role is split across three core areas:
**Engineering Efficiency & AI Automation (50%):** Design and execute a comprehensive automation strategy spanning the entire engineering process—from defect detection and triage through code review and pull request generation. You'll integrate LLM tooling into the development pipeline, establish monitoring and validation loops, and create feedback mechanisms for continuous improvement. Measure relentlessly: track velocity, defect rates, time to resolution, and team satisfaction. The goal is reinvestment in new capabilities, not cost extraction.
**Product Leadership & Strategic Scope (40%):** Own the HRSD product roadmap and technical architecture. Start with a tightly scoped product to establish market fit and team credibility, then expand into adjacent HR Service Delivery areas. Lead cross-functional partnerships with product management and customer success to translate market needs into engineering priorities. Partner deeply with Design to shape user experience, translate technical capabilities into intuitive workflows, and foster shared language about trade-offs. Establish technical standards and cultural norms around code quality, testing rigor, and AI system governance.
**Organizational Leadership & Growth (10%):** Build and lead a team of 8–12 engineers. Hire for potential and rigor; invest in their growth. As you expand, mentor new engineering managers and share the playbook for lean, AI-enabled teams across the broader engineering organization.
ServiceNow's mission is to build the single, unified intelligent platform that runs the modern enterprise. HRSD transforms employee lifecycle management from manual, distributed overhead into autonomous, AI-driven workflows. The company believes the future of HR technology is fewer, smarter people operating smaller teams enabled by generative and agentic intelligence.
**Requirements:**
- B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a highly quantitative technical field
- 12+ years of professional software engineering experience, with at least 4+ years in technical leadership roles (staff engineer, engineering manager, or equivalent)
- Proven track record shipping complex systems in production, with evidence of personally guiding the architecture and engineering process for at least one system
- Practical experience with at least one strong classical background: distributed systems, machine learning, compilers, systems programming, or large-scale data infrastructure
- Classical Computer Science foundation with rigorous training in computer science, software engineering, or machine learning; experience building production systems in complex, real-world environments at scale
- AI and Automation fluency: not just aware of LLMs and AI tooling, but actively use them in your workflow; understand their limitations and potential; have conviction about where they genuinely reduce toil versus add complexity; can design systems that use AI to amplify human judgment rather than replace it
- Design sensibility and cross-functional leadership: conviction about user experience, not just technical implementation; worked closely with designers, product managers, and researchers; understand that good engineering leadership means making space for other disciplines to do their best work; can argue intelligently about trade-offs between technical elegance and user clarity
- Honest about trade-offs: understand that lean teams executing quickly sometimes ship tech debt, and that some constraints protect quality and stability; can make thoughtful decisions about which is which and be honest with leadership about consequences
- Strong communication skills: write clearly, present to executives and technical audiences, translate between business and engineering languages
