Salary: USD 294,000 - 345,000 / annual
Robinhood is seeking a Director of Engineering to lead the Brokerage Platform organization, the backbone of all trading, clearing, and settlement operations. The platform spans four interconnected teams: Market Data & Symbology (real-time and reference data), Trading Platform (order routing and execution), Clearing (settlement and back-office operations), and Brokerage Infrastructure (platform abstractions and modernization). This organization operates 24/7 around critical market functions and handles every equities trade, options contract, event contract, and crypto transaction on the platform.
In this role, you will own the full technical strategy, people leadership, and delivery execution for one of Robinhood's largest engineering organizations. You will lead a large, distributed team of senior and staff-level engineers and engineering managers, driving platform investments with direct business impact. Key responsibilities include setting technical direction across all four sub-teams, managing a high volume of incoming requests from product teams while protecting engineering capacity, owning reliability and operational health of mission-critical systems, and championing platform modernization initiatives like stack rewrites, sharding, and multi-region scaling.
You will partner closely with a dedicated TPM and engage deeply with trading, crypto, and active trader product teams. This is not a remote-management role—you will need the engineering depth to challenge technical decisions, the platform mindset to drive business-moving investments, and the leadership presence to build and retain world-class talent in a high-stakes domain. You will represent the Brokerage Platform roadmap to product, operations, and executive stakeholders across Robinhood.
The role is based in Menlo Park, CA with 5 days per week in-office attendance expected.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 15+ years of software engineering experience, with 6+ years in engineering leadership roles (Director or Senior Director managing large, multi-team organizations)
- Deep platform engineering background: you've owned and driven technical direction of foundational backend platforms at scale, not just product features
- Track record of driving platform modernization bets that delivered real business outcomes
- Comfort operating in high-severity, always-on engineering environments; experience leading teams through major incidents
- Strong background with distributed systems, backend services at scale, Go or Python, and cloud infrastructure (AWS preferred)
- Experience at the intersection of financial services, trading, brokerage, or high-criticality domains is a strong plus (market data, clearing, order execution, or brokerage infrastructure)
- Background from high-performance engineering organizations in fintech, trading, crypto, or large-scale consumer platforms (Robinhood, Coinbase, SoFi, Google, or similar) is a strong plus
