Moxie is a Series C healthcare technology company empowering aesthetic entrepreneurs to build profitable, independent practices. The company has grown to support 700+ practices nationwide with a global, remote-first team. You will serve as Director of Engineering, leading Moxie's engineering organization of approximately 60 engineers as the day-to-day leader reporting to the Head of Engineering. This is a people-management role with significant scope: you will own delivery, organizational health, manager development, staffing, and engineering operating strategy. You will also lead AI strategy and execution across both the product and software development lifecycle. Key responsibilities include: - Establish clear leadership of the engineering organization within three months, with all seven Engineering Managers reporting to you, running the engineering side of the Product and Engineering operating cadence, and serving as the first escalation point for cross-team delivery, staffing, and execution issues. - Mature engineering performance measures (Linear, DORA, reliability metrics) and implement 2–3 concrete operating improvements within three months. By month six, drive measurable gains in delivery predictability, cycle time, or reliability. - Assess current AI usage across product and SDLC in the first quarter, drive at least one AI or agentic initiative into production by month six, and embed AI-assisted development in the engineering operating model by month nine while maintaining clear standards for architecture, security, cost, and reliability. - Set an opinionated technical roadmap by month nine that allocates capacity across product delivery, architecture, platform investment, reliability, developer productivity, and technical debt, aligned with Product and company priorities. - Partner daily with Head of Engineering and Product leadership through operating cadences to surface risks, dependencies, and tradeoffs early. - Build and shape the engineering organization through hiring strategy, people management, SDLC maturation, and org design. Develop and coach Engineering Managers, handle performance and staffing decisions directly, and build relationships with senior engineers and staff engineers. You'll inherit a productive, fast-moving engineering organization at an inflection point with the opportunity to mature engineering practices and shape the transition toward AI-powered software development. REQUIREMENTS: - 12+ years of software engineering experience, including 5+ years in engineering leadership and at least 3 years leading managers and technical leaders. - Experience running a 30–60 person engineering organization through multiple Engineering Managers, ideally at a Series B–D product company. - Demonstrated ability to set consistent management bar, develop and coach EMs, and handle performance, staffing, and org design decisions directly. - Proven experience building KPI systems (DORA, cycle time, reliability) that teams use to change behavior. - Proven experience building production AI and agentic systems with real standards for evals, observability, security, and cost; ability to explain ROI impact in detail. - Strong technical judgment in system design, software design patterns, and engineering processes (agile, scrum, SRE, DevOps). - Comfort with architecture review and design, capacity tradeoffs between feature delivery and platform investment. - Experience building and shaping engineering organizations, working closely with founders and senior technical leaders. - Ability to bring out the best in engineering managers and staff engineers. - Health tech or vertical SaaS experience is a plus. - This role requires staying close to architecture and the AI roadmap to guide them—not managing purely through other leaders at arm's length.
