Via Transportation is building the technology backbone for modern public transit networks globally. As Director of AI Engineering, Internal Products, you will lead an engineering team building high-impact internal products using AI-native development practices. You'll pioneer a platform enabling employees across the company to create software with AI agents—what Via calls "nano engineers."
Key responsibilities include:
- Building internal products that improve business operations across Finance, HR, Operations, Sales, and Marketing, plus tools for field teams to coordinate work, surface insights, resolve exceptions, and make real-time decisions
- Working directly with end users to understand their needs and translate them into products with measurable business impact
- Rethinking software development in the age of AI by leveraging coding agents, AI-assisted development, automated testing, and new engineering workflows to accelerate problem-to-solution cycles
- Leading development of Via's AI-powered internal development platform, including integrations, permissions, infrastructure, testing, deployment, and governance to ensure employee-created software is reliable and useful
- Recruiting, developing, and leading exceptional engineers; defining architecture, engineering standards, operating model, and team culture to enable scaling
- Partnering with company leadership to identify highest-impact software and AI opportunities, and challenging assumptions about build versus buy decisions
Requirements:
- Exceptional engineering leader with strong technical foundation and proven experience building and shipping production software
- Experience leading engineers, making sound architectural decisions, and delivering systems people depend on
- AI-native builder who actively explores and uses modern AI coding tools and agents; excited to rethink how engineering teams operate
- Pragmatic systems thinker who understands security, permissions, integrations, observability, testing, and maintainability; knows how to apply appropriate rigor to each use case
- Product thinker focused on solving problems, not just technology; able to turn ambiguous needs into useful products
- Comfortable with ambiguity; able to move fluidly between strategy, architecture, hands-on building, and working with business teams
- Organizational multiplier excited about enabling others to solve problems independently
