Salary: USD 198,000 - 228,000 / annual
The Nuclear Company is a Series A AI-enabled startup pioneering fleet-scale nuclear reactor design and deployment. This Director role owns all cloud and security engineering across Microsoft Azure and AWS, including network and security architecture, identity management, threat detection and incident response, vulnerability management, and compliance evidence production for audits and customer reviews.
As a hands-on director, you will lead a small senior engineering team while remaining technical enough to serve as an escalation point. The team will grow based on company needs. You will own the full spectrum of cloud and security strategy: setting network and security architecture standards, making build-vs-buy decisions, managing vendor relationships and operating budgets, and directing identity security (privileged access, MFA, conditional access, non-human identities). You will lead threat detection and incident response programs including playbooks and tabletop exercises, drive vulnerability management to closure against defined SLAs, and produce technical evidence for audits and customer security reviews.
On the business side, you will own intake and prioritization of IT demand through a documented process, maintain rolling roadmaps with priority functions (starting with the Nuclear Operating System and Legal), and coordinate supported functions' cloud usage with engineering platform owners. You will also direct email and collaboration security (anti-phishing, BEC controls, DMARC/SPF/DKIM), govern SaaS security posture (OAuth, third-party app access, shadow-SaaS discovery, vendor reviews), and set enablement-first guardrails for AI tools.

REQUIREMENTS:
- 10+ years in security and/or network engineering, including 4+ years leading technical staff or programs
- Cloud engineering and security depth across Microsoft Azure and AWS
- Deep identity security experience: privileged access management, MFA, conditional access, non-human identities
- Experience building or maturing incident response (playbooks, tabletops) and owning vulnerability management with remediation SLAs
- Hands-on familiarity with enterprise stack: SSE/zero-trust access (e.g., Zscaler), next-generation firewalls (e.g., FortiGate), EDR, SIEM, MDM — deep enough to direct work and back up the team
- Fluency with compliance frameworks (NIST 800-53, CMMC, or equivalent) and producing audit-ready technical evidence
- Demonstrated experience partnering directly with business functions and managing demand against real capacity
- Strong communication skills; ability to translate security risk for leadership and IT plans for the business
PREFERRED:
- Experience in regulated industries (nuclear, defense, energy, federal); familiarity with 10 CFR 73.54 and NRC cybersecurity requirements
- Relevant certifications: CISSP, CISM, CCSP, or equivalent
- Experience transitioning outsourced or contractor-run security functions in-house
- Experience securing AI tooling, large language models, or agentic workflows
