Nomad Digital is the world's leading provider of passenger and fleet connectivity solutions to the railway industry. Founded in 2002 and headquartered in the UK, the company serves 80+ global customers across 40+ countries, designing and deploying passenger Wi-Fi, on-board infotainment systems, and remote condition-based monitoring solutions for fleet optimization.
You will join an agile R&D product team as the DevOps expert, responsible for CI/CD automation and deployment pipelines. Your core responsibilities include:
**Deployment Automation:** Configure and maintain Puppet and Ansible automation code to deploy and update systems across a hybrid estate. Convert manual deployment procedures into automated, pipeline-driven workflows. Plan and execute controlled rollouts of planned and patch releases using staged deployments, health checks, automatic failure stops, and tested rollbacks. Ensure deployments are safe for remote, resource-constrained, and intermittently connected systems. Coordinate releases across the estate and work closely with developers to test new automation versions and provide feedback.
**CI/CD Pipelines & Release Engineering:** Act as the subject-matter expert for GitLab CI/CD, designing and maintaining pipelines, reusable templates, runners, and pipeline images. Choose appropriate deployment models (push, pull, or GitOps) for different parts of the estate. Build automated quality gates including linting, dry runs, configuration diffs, and acceptance testing. Leverage virtual machines (KVM/QEMU/libvirt, cloud-init, Packer) to create disposable test environments. Automate end-to-end release workflows including versioning, release notes, documentation publishing, and environment promotion. Implement security best practices: protected secrets, masked variables, protected branches, least-privilege access, and dependency scanning. Measure and improve pipeline speed, reliability, and developer experience.
**AI-Assisted Engineering:** Use AI coding assistants productively for writing, reviewing, testing, and documenting pipelines and deployment configuration. Define and apply safe-use practices: use only company-approved tools, never share secrets or customer data with AI tools, treat AI output as untrusted until reviewed and tested, and maintain human approval on all production changes. Ensure AI-generated changes go through the same review and quality gates as any other change.
**Operations, Support & Quality:** Diagnose and resolve faults across Linux, networking, and application layers. Work with developers and QA to ensure all work is tested before deployment. Configure and install network equipment such as wireless access points and switches. Maintain deployment and process documentation. Adhere to audit, security, and regulatory requirements.
**Requirements:** Degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience with relevant certifications in CI/CD, infrastructure automation (Ansible/Puppet), Linux, cloud technologies, monitoring, and Python programming. Senior DevOps/Platform Engineer with 3+ years of relevant experience and a strong sense of ownership for production quality. Expertise required in GitLab CI/CD, Ansible/Puppet automation, Linux administration, release engineering, networking, virtualization, and infrastructure-as-code. Desirable experience includes Kubernetes, GitOps, cloud platforms, monitoring, and hybrid edge-to-cloud environments.
