Mastra is an open-source TypeScript framework for building AI agents, backed by Y Combinator and Spark Capital with $35M raised. The company has grown to 27k+ GitHub stars and 1M+ weekly npm downloads in under 18 months. As a Customer Engineer, you will operate at the intersection of production reality and core platform design, blending forward deployment with core engineering work. You'll work directly with customer teams deploying agents in production, translating real-world challenges into improvements to the Mastra framework itself. Key responsibilities include: **With Customers:** - Collaborate directly with customer teams building production agent systems - Design and implement agents alongside their engineers - Improve reliability, evaluation strategies, monitoring, and scaling approaches - Help teams transition from prototype to durable, production-ready systems - Train and upskill customers to become Mastra experts - Share patterns and best practices across accounts - Troubleshoot and strengthen systems when agents break or performance stalls **In the Core Framework:** - Convert recurring customer challenges into open-source improvements - Fix reliability and performance issues in the platform - Ship new primitives and refine existing ones - Raise code quality standards across the codebase - Contribute to roadmap direction based on firsthand production insights - Transform real-world friction into durable, reusable primitives This role is unique because most companies separate customer-facing engineering from core product engineering. Mastra intentionally bridges this gap—the best platform improvements come directly from real-world usage, and this role compresses that feedback loop. The company is small, shipping fast, and fully remote with team members distributed across North American and European time zones. **Requirements:** - Have built and operated AI systems in production - Ability to move from implementation details to system-level thinking - Pattern recognition: see recurring issues where others see one-offs - Deep care for developer ergonomics and user experience - Preference for ownership over narrow scope - Comfortable moving between hands-on customer collaboration and foundational platform design - Experience with TypeScript and/or Node.js ecosystem preferred - Strong communication skills for customer-facing work
