Gusto is seeking a Compensation Partner to serve as the operational engine of its compensation function. This role is responsible for ensuring compensation programs run accurately, on time, and consistently across the organization. The Compensation Partner will support Gusto's mission to grow the small business economy by enabling the company to attract, retain, and reward top talent.
Day-to-day responsibilities include:
- Supporting execution of compensation programs and cycles (merit, promotion, equity refresh), handling data preparation, validation, tracking, and follow-through
- Serving as a first point of contact for compensation questions from HR Business Partners, recruiters, and managers
- Managing annual compensation cycles from data collection through communication
- Conducting job matching and market benchmarking using survey data (Radford/Aon, Mercer, Pave) and preparing pay range recommendations
- Modeling new hire, promotion, and internal transfer recommendations against approved bands and internal equity comparisons
- Maintaining compensation data integrity across Workday, Pave, and compensation bands through recurring audits and reconciliation
- Preparing recurring reports and dashboards on pay positioning, band utilization, and cycle progress
- Using AI tools and automation to streamline recurring analysis, audits, and reporting
- Supporting compliance with federal, state, and local pay regulations, including pay transparency postings and FLSA classification reviews
- Documenting and improving compensation processes to ensure repeatability and auditability
The role operates with a systems-first, AI-native mindset and partners closely with HR Business Partners, Finance, Legal, and business leaders. Success is measured by accuracy and timeliness of compensation data, reliability of programs supported, and growing ability to resolve questions independently.
Gusto's compensation function is scaling from early foundations to a mature, high-trust operation. This role offers real ownership to shape how compensation is designed and delivered as the company grows.
Gusto has physical office spaces in Denver, San Francisco, and New York City. Employees based in these locations are expected to work from the office approximately 2-3 days per week. A secure, reliable, and consistent internet connection is required for all work, including non-office days.
REQUIREMENTS:

- Strong analytical foundation: advanced spreadsheet skills (Excel, Google Sheets) including lookups, pivots, and formula-driven models; ability to spot when a number looks wrong
- Exceptional attention to detail and track record of owning recurring, deadline-driven work without dropped threads
- Exposure to compensation fundamentals such as salary bands, job leveling, market benchmarking, or offer modeling, or clear evidence of analytical aptitude and curiosity to pick them up quickly
- Comfort handling highly confidential information with discretion and consistency
- Clear, concise written communication; ability to explain numbers or processes simply to non-compensation professionals
- Interest in compensation and employment law (FLSA, pay transparency, pay equity) with drive to build real expertise over time
- High integrity and intellectual curiosity; someone who asks why a process works the way it does
- Background in Mathematics, Finance, Statistics, Economics, or a related quantitative field is preferred but not required
