finmid is building infrastructure that integrates access to capital for SMEs directly into the platforms they use daily. The company combines regulated financial infrastructure with modern software engineering, with legal embedded directly in the product stack rather than adjacent to it.
You will be the primary legal point of contact for commercial and product teams, owning finmid's contract stack end-to-end across platform-facing, borrower-facing, and supplier-facing agreements. You'll work in close partnership with the General Counsel, Head of Commercial, and product leads across Europe, with significant autonomy but embedded within cross-functional teams.
Key responsibilities include:
**Commercial Contracting**: Own the full contract lifecycle—negotiating independently with counterparties once you've internalized company positions, redlining against established playbooks, and escalating genuinely difficult calls for collective decision-making. The focus is quality at volume with legible reasoning.
**Product Enablement**: Sit alongside product leads as features develop. Translate roadmap into legal frameworks: term sheets, customer-facing T&Cs, partner schedules, and contractual scaffolding that allows features to ship without constant agreement rewrites. Design contracts that flex with the product rather than constrain it.
**Contract Management Infrastructure**: Build the operating system for commercial legal—including AI-assisted redline workflows, self-updating clause libraries and playbooks, automated T&C propagation across jurisdictions and languages, version control systems, and internal knowledge layers for rapid onboarding.
**Procurement and Vendor Contracting**: Negotiate third-party supplier agreements (cloud, data, outsourced services), holding the line on liability, IP, data, and exit terms while ensuring vendor contracts map cleanly to downstream regulatory obligations.
**Regulatory-Embedded Contracting**: Ensure commercial agreements meet regulatory expectations including DORA resilience, ICT third-party requirements, GDPR and sub-processor architecture, EU outsourcing rules, and vendor risk standards that survive audit. Treat regulatory clauses as reusable components.
**AI and Tooling**: Evaluate and integrate AI tools (Claude, Noxtua, Legora, etc.) into daily practice. Run real experiments, measure throughput gains, and build leverage into the function.
In your first three months, you'll map finmid's full contract surface, take over negotiation of live commercial and procurement deals, build a playbook for top recurring positions, eliminate at least one painful manual workflow, and develop a 12-month vision for the commercial legal function.
**Requirements**:
- Graduate of a top-tier EU, UK, or US law school, qualified or qualifying in a relevant jurisdiction
- At least one year of experience in Big Law or in-house at a technology company, fintech, SaaS business, or financial institution (shape of experience matters more than years)
- Direct exposure to commercial contract drafting and negotiation; ability to hold ground in redline conversations
- Bonus: experience with finance, regulated products, or settings where commercial contracting coexists with supervisory expectations
- Working permit in Germany
- Systems thinking: instinct to design workflows that prevent recurring problems rather than draft around them case-by-case
- Algorithmic thinking: ability to decompose contracting processes into decision trees and explain to product/engineering teams
- Treat contracts as product: understand clause libraries as infrastructure and process design as the lever for scaling
- Practical curiosity about AI tooling; willingness to get hands-on and develop clear-eyed views of where legal AI genuinely accelerates work
- Balance legal precision with commercial pragmatism; know which positions are worth fighting for
- Write with precision: clauses, playbooks, and guidance that are unambiguous, implementation-ready, and concise
- Comfortable working cross-functionally with product and engineering; at home in Linear tickets, design reviews, roadmap conversations
- Enjoy building from scratch; see day-one function state as opportunity rather than deficit
- Maintain high quality standards and serve as trusted advisor to internal counterparts
