Fluidstack is building civilization-scale infrastructure for AI, acquiring power, designing and operating data centers at gigawatt scale. The company is singularly focused on delivering compute infrastructure faster than anyone else, rethinking every layer of the stack from hardware to software.
The Energy Team is solving critical problems: installing solar, storage, and gas generation at unprecedented rates across multi-gigawatt sites; securing supply at scale by qualifying new suppliers and reshoring capacity; making hybrid plants deliver firm generation suitable for AI workloads; and navigating regulatory approvals (balancing authority certification, firm load rights, permits, interconnection) years ahead of construction.
As BESS Lead Engineer, you will own the electrical design and sizing of multi-hundred-megawatt battery energy storage systems (BESS) across several concurrent gigawatt sites, from single-line diagrams through protection, grounding, power and energy ratings, and augmentation strategy. You will qualify and dual-source BESS vendors on technical merit, including factory witness testing, failure mode analysis, and warranty negotiation. You will define how storage, solar, and on-site generation dispatch together to maintain firm load profiles through resource variability and generator trips. You will drive NFPA 855 compliance and hazard mitigation analysis through Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) and insurance review before equipment arrives on site. You will take each plant through commissioning, capacity testing, round-trip performance validation, and controls integration before live AI training loads connect.
Fluidstack operates with full autonomy and end-to-end ownership, insane urgency, first-principles reasoning, and a focus on work that matters. The company values people who care deeply about the problem space and are willing to put in long hours at high intensity.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Demonstrated experience taking grid-scale battery storage from design through energized operation; ability to name specific sites and megawatt capacities.
- Experience sizing storage systems against real duty cycles and living with the results, including augmentation decisions and model refinement.
- Track record choosing BESS vendors on technical grounds, attending factory witness testing, and critically evaluating datasheets.
- Experience arguing NFPA 855 and hazard mitigation analysis before an AHJ or insurer and achieving approval.
- Experience integrating storage controls with generation and load to create unified plant behavior.
- Strong technical writing ability to communicate decisions clearly to procurement, regulatory, and executive audiences.
- Bonus qualifications: hybrid plant and dispatch modeling (PLEXOS, PVsyst, HOMER); power system studies (PSCAD, ETAP, protection coordination, arc flash); behind-the-meter and islanded microgrid operation; interconnection and market processes (FERC, ERCOT, MISO); Professional Engineer license.
