Handoff is an AI agent platform that automates estimating, operations, and business development for construction remodelers. The company serves over 10,000 monthly active users with $6B in annualized project volume and is backed by Y Combinator, Initialized, and Greycroft.
As a Forward Deployed Engineer, you will be the dedicated technical owner for 2–3 enterprise construction accounts, embedding with each client's software and estimating teams. You'll customize Handoff's AI-automated takeoff platform (estimates, takeoff drawings, summary reports) to match each client's exact templates, naming conventions, units, materials preferences, and branding. You'll design and stand up intake and delivery workflows—file transfers, custom CSV exports, API payloads—integrating with their POS/ERP systems (e.g., Oracle). You'll expose and document Handoff's API for client consumption, build SKU matching to map estimate line items to supplier catalogs, and maintain those mappings as catalogs evolve.
You'll assess each client's tech stack, recommend realistic integration paths, and assist with connections to legacy systems, scoping feasibility honestly. You'll lead weekly calibration reviews with the client's estimating team, incorporate correction notes, and drive accuracy against agreed error-rate targets. You'll meet delivery SLAs, provide first-line technical support, and document account-specific configurations for continuity and clean handover.
This is a high-ownership role for engineers comfortable with ambiguity, direct customer contact, and accountability for real business outcomes. You'll partner with a Construction Account Manager who owns the business relationship while you own everything technical, from pilot success through production integration and ongoing support.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 5+ years of software engineering experience with a track record of shipping and operating production systems.
- Full-stack proficiency: Node.js, Python, and SQL; able to customize outputs, build integrations, and automate exports.
- Hands-on API experience: designing, exposing, and documenting APIs; mapping data to client schemas; working with legacy or non-REST systems.
- Strong client-facing skills: professional, responsive, comfortable working directly with clients (email, calls, Microsoft Teams) with both engineers and non-technical estimating staff.
- Metrics-driven: define quality metrics, track accuracy trends, make progress quantifiable and defensible.
- Self-contained and autonomous: own technical delivery for multiple accounts, navigate ambiguity, shifting requirements, and staggered timelines.
- B2+ English for effective communication and documentation with US clients.
- Bonus: exposure to LLM/AI applications or familiarity with residential construction (framing, foundation, roofing, siding, interior scope) and estimating workflows.
