GitLab is seeking a Backend Engineer to join the Change Record team within the Source Code stage. This role focuses on building trustworthy records of code changes—what changed, why, and who or what made it—as AI agents increasingly collaborate with developers on code. You'll work on one of GitLab's oldest and most complex product areas, using Ruby on Rails to improve critical systems serving GitLab.com, self-managed instances, and GitLab Dedicated. The Source Code stage provides the interface layer through Gitaly to Git repositories behind a large share of GitLab traffic. Your responsibilities will include performance tuning, caching, rate limiting, observability, and resiliency improvements, collaborating with product, design, security, Gitaly, Code Review, and Source Code Experience teams. Key responsibilities: - Develop secure, well-tested, performant features using Ruby on Rails and GraphQL - Work through complex requirements and legacy constraints to deliver reliable solutions - Design and maintain backend services, APIs, data models, and business logic supporting source code workflows - Collaborate across functions and teams, both asynchronously and synchronously - Use AI agents for well-scoped work when they can speed up delivery without sacrificing quality - Write maintainable code following GitLab standards and contribute to constructive code reviews - Monitor production health metrics, participate in Tier 2 on-call, troubleshoot incidents, and improve observability - Share knowledge through code review, technical documentation, and collaboration The team comprises four engineers (backend and frontend) working across Europe and North America, supporting both synchronous and asynchronous collaboration. You'll work closely with other Source Code teams, Agentic Preview, Repository Services, Hardening, Gitaly, and the AI Governance team. Requirements: - Professional experience building backend web applications, services, or APIs using Ruby and GraphQL - Understanding of relational databases, SQL, data modeling, caching, background processing, and backend performance practices - Full-stack development experience to build and maintain user-facing workflows and underlying systems - Experience writing backend unit and integration tests, familiarity with testing pyramid, Git, and collaborative code review - Clear written and spoken English communication skills for remote, asynchronous environments - Ability to manage priorities, work through ambiguity, take ownership, and seek guidance when needed - Experience using AI coding agents to speed up development while critically reviewing output - Bonus: experience building agents or agent-based workflows running in production
