lemon.markets is a Brokerage-as-a-Service platform enabling FinTechs, banks, and wealth managers to offer investment products through a single, well-documented API. As part of the dwpbank group, the company operates as an independent fintech with its own team and product identity.
As a Backend Engineer, you will design and build backend services and architecture for the brokerage API platform. You will independently develop high-quality features and services within cross-functional teams, taking ownership from implementation through production. Your work will span one of three product domains: Customer Lifecycle, Investing, or Banking processes, contributing to the Core Platform & Systems.
Key responsibilities include:
- Designing and implementing highly scalable architecture and reliable REST APIs
- Building and operating reliable, scalable backend systems as part of a cross-functional team
- Writing well-structured, maintainable, and well-tested code
- Guiding other engineers through code reviews
- Making thoughtful implementation choices based on product context and customer needs
- Taking ownership of problems and acting decisively with minimal supervision
- Contributing to technical decisions within your team
The tech stack is Python, FastAPI, AWS, and PostgreSQL. You will work in a lean, startup-like environment where you can move quickly and focus on what matters most. The role offers opportunities to grow into a team lead position long-term.
The company emphasizes a product-engineering mindset: solving customer problems, becoming a domain expert, and building from scratch with high involvement in product development. You'll work with a small team that values knowledge sharing, mentorship, and collaborative problem-solving.
Work arrangement: Hybrid within Germany with flexibility to work from anywhere in the country. Individual contributors are expected to be on-site in the Berlin office 4+ days per month for team collaboration, events, and offsites. Workation is available: up to 10 consecutive days or 60 days per year anywhere in the EU.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Proficiency in at least one modern programming language (Python, Go, Java, Ruby, JavaScript, or TypeScript); Python experience not required but willingness to learn it is essential
- Experience designing and implementing highly scalable architecture and reliable REST APIs
- Solid experience with cloud environments (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and associated architectural patterns
- Good understanding of document-based or relational database technology (MySQL/PostgreSQL)
- Ability to write high-quality, understandable, maintainable, and well-tested code
- Experience guiding other engineers through code reviews
- Active incorporation of AI tooling into daily workflow
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to evaluate complex technological issues
- Track record of designing, building, and operating reliable and scalable backend systems in cross-functional teams
- Preferred: prior experience in Fintech or financial services (not required)
- Comfort working in a startup or lean organization environment
- Willingness to learn new technologies on the job
- Ability to take ownership and act decisively with minimal supervision
- Team player mentality with natural inclination toward knowledge sharing and mentorship
