Cambio is a software platform for real estate decarbonization, helping commercial real estate owners achieve net-zero portfolios through an AI-driven sustainability, asset, and investment management platform. Backed by Y Combinator, Google, and Stanford, the company is the fastest-growing startup in its category. In this Backend Engineer role, you will launch customer-facing features by building Django backend services, improve customer experience through performance optimizations, and reduce technical debt to enhance the engineering team's quality of life. You'll support and collaborate closely with teammates in a fast-paced, outcome-driven environment. The role emphasizes shipping through obstacles, moving with urgency, and closing each week with visible impact. You'll own your work end-to-end, proactively communicate progress, and show up for teammates in person—unblocking issues before being asked and ensuring no one stays stuck. The team values iteration speed as a quality metric, believing that building fast and learning faster is how great products are built. Tech stack includes AWS, Kubernetes, Redis, PostgreSQL, SQS, CDK, GitHub, and Retool for infrastructure; Django REST/Ninja and Celery for backend; TypeScript, React, Next.js, and Tailwind CSS for frontend; and AWS Bedrock, OpenAI, and Claude for LLM capabilities. The company offers competitive compensation with startup equity, flexible time off, a $1,200 annual learning budget, catered lunch, a premium workstation in a beautiful Uptown Waterloo office, and an office gym. REQUIREMENTS: - Authorized to work in the US or Canada, and able to travel to both - Independent problem simplification skills - Experienced in Python web development (Django & Ninja is a bonus) - Solid grasp of computer science and algorithm fundamentals - Exceptional research and debugging skills - Understanding of technical trade-offs and the YAGNI principle - Low ego, curious, and serious about your craft - Outcome-driven mindset with genuine enjoyment of work - Ability to ship through obstacles and move with urgency
