Justworks is an HR and payroll platform helping businesses streamline HR operations and compliance. This Associate Software Engineer role is based in Toronto and offers the opportunity to own large-scoped projects from discovery through launch, with a focus on customer impact and outcomes. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams (product, design, other engineers) to solve customer challenges and improve the platform's performance, reliability, and scalability. Key responsibilities include independently owning projects, enhancing high-volume fault-tolerant processing infrastructure, improving testing and continuous deployment systems, and maintaining security for sensitive data. You'll also contribute to engineering excellence through technical leadership, knowledge-sharing, and mentorship of junior developers. The role emphasizes how work gets done as much as what gets done. Success is anchored in good judgment (critical thinking, risk assessment, ownership), resourcefulness (can-do approach, optimization), teamwork and communication (documentation, collaboration, listening), influence and leadership (knowledge-sharing, mentorship), and continuous learning. The company culture centers on COGIS values: Camaraderie, Openness, Grit, Integrity, and Simplicity. Technologies include Golang, Ruby on Rails, JavaScript, MySQL, Kafka, AWS, Git, Memcache, Redis, ElasticSearch, Docker, Terraform, Kubernetes, CircleCI, and DataDog. Requirements: - Minimum 1 year of professional software development experience - Proficiency in server-side languages: Python, Java, Node.js, or Ruby (Go experience is a plus) - Solid SQL skills and understanding of database fundamentals - Experience with cloud platforms, preferably AWS (basic deployment and monitoring) - Interest in helping junior developers and contributing to team knowledge sharing - Experience collaborating with designers and product managers on feature development
