Salary: USD 188,000 - 221,000 / annual
Faro Health is an AI-powered clinical trial optimization platform helping life sciences companies design better trials faster. As Platform Architect, you will own the design and evolution of the platform capabilities that internal engineering teams and business stakeholders build upon. This is a hands-on role where you spend meaningful time in code, prototyping designs and building reference implementations.
You will own system architecture end-to-end, including all non-functional requirements (performance, scalability, reliability, security, observability, cost). You'll lead large-scale, cross-team platform initiatives from ideation through release, partner with engineering managers and product to sequence architecture into shippable increments, and conduct architectural reviews across the organization. Your work has unusual leverage—good decisions compound across every engineering team.
Key responsibilities include: designing large-scale platform capabilities; ensuring non-functional requirements are met; breaking designs into incremental deliverables; writing and critiquing architectural designs; evaluating build-vs-buy decisions; contributing hands-on to high-complexity features; establishing engineering best practices; mentoring engineers across the organization; driving adoption of your platform with internal customers; and representing architecture to strategic customers and their technical leadership.
The platform stack includes TypeScript, React, Node.js, Python, Redis, containers, Terraform, and Azure (migrating to AKS). You'll work in a hybrid environment with a main San Diego headquarters featuring gym, outdoor workspace, and discounted food hall.
REQUIREMENTS:
Scope and Judgment (demonstrated experience required):
- Designed systems used by multiple teams and managed long-term consequences
- Led migrations or deprecations to completion including full retirement
- Distinguished reversible from irreversible decisions and calibrated process accordingly
- Driven technical alignment among senior engineers who don't report to you
- Partnered with engineering managers to get architectural work onto roadmaps and delivered incrementally
- Made and defended build-vs-buy recommendations
- Prioritized and pitched tech debt (what to accumulate, hold, pay down, retire)
- Owned security posture of designed systems and partnered with security teams
- Made architectural decisions with real cost consequences and explained outcomes
- Presented architecture to customer technical leadership and held the room through hard questions
Technical Depth (required):
- Deep expertise in at least one general-purpose application language and one infrastructure-as-code toolchain (primary stack: TypeScript or Python on Azure with Terraform)
- Strong understanding of cloud-native architecture and cloud operations
- Experience running containerized workloads (migrating to AKS)
- Experience designing data models on relational stores (PostgreSQL, SQL Server, or similar) including schema evolution in production
- Experience designing real-time data or event-driven systems
- Experience designing integrations across product boundaries including versioned interfaces, compatibility guarantees, and failure isolation
- Experience designing front-end architecture at scale including component libraries, state management, and design-system boundaries

- Excellent written and verbal communication; ability to move between engineers, executives, and customers adopting each audience's vocabulary

Strong Plus (preferred):
- Familiarity with stack: TypeScript, React, Node.js, Python, Redis, Agno, Vite, uv, Containers, Terraform, Azure
- Integrating AI/LLM capabilities into production systems including validation of model outputs
- Designing systems under regulatory constraint (validation, audit trails, data integrity, traceability, attribution)
- Clinical trials or regulated healthcare domain experience
