OpenAI's Applied AI Engineering team is seeking a technically proficient, business-minded Applied AI Engineer to work with strategic startup customers in Singapore. You will serve as a trusted technical advisor, guiding startups through ideation, development, delivery, and scaling of generative AI applications on OpenAI's platform.
In this role, you will partner closely with startup customers to build novel applications on the OpenAI API, helping them move rapidly from concept to production. You'll provide proactive technical guidance to maximize business impact and accelerate development. You will experiment and prototype alongside customers, demonstrating practical use cases and best practices. A key responsibility is synthesizing customer feedback and delivering it to OpenAI's Product and Research teams to inform platform improvements.
You'll contribute to open-source resources, codify best practices, and publish useful materials to scale the function across the startup ecosystem. You will build relationships within the startup community, serving as a technical partner to both individual customers and the broader ecosystem. Collaboration with Sales, Solutions Engineering, Applied Research, and Product teams is essential to identify customer opportunities, align technical work with business goals, and help customers bring AI applications to production.
The role is based in OpenAI's Singapore office with a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week. Relocation assistance is offered to new employees.
Requirements:
- Fluency in Mandarin Chinese (required for working with Mandarin-speaking customers and vendors)
- 5+ years of experience as a software engineer, ML engineer, or equivalent, ideally in a startup environment
- Experience as a founder or founding engineer is highly valued
- Proficiency in Python and JavaScript with strong grasp of AI/LLM best practices
- Experience building and/or delivering prototypes on OpenAI's API platform
- Ability to proactively identify opportunities for maximizing customer business value through the OpenAI API
- End-to-end problem ownership and willingness to acquire missing knowledge
- Humble attitude, eagerness to help colleagues, and commitment to team success
- Effective, high-throughput operator capable of driving multiple concurrent projects with ruthless prioritization
- Passion for startups and belief in their potential to become large enterprises
