Anthropic is seeking an Applied AI Engineer to serve as a trusted technical advisor to AI-native life sciences and biotech startups. In this role, you will lead deep technical engagements with startup engineering and scientific teams, helping them build products on Claude and integrate AI into their research workflows. You'll work at the intersection of AI capabilities and life sciences needs, advising on implementation, agent design, and architecture as startups push the boundaries of what's possible with AI in scientific discovery.
Key responsibilities include:
- Serve as a deep technical advisor to high-potential life sciences startups, whether Claude is embedded in their product or their research processes
- Work hands-on with startup engineering teams through pair programming and architecture reviews, understanding scientific workflows end-to-end
- Develop prototypes, evaluation suites, benchmarks, and technical documentation that enable startups to build and scale with Claude
- Create reference implementations and sample code, including MCP servers for domain-specific data sources (genomics, literature databases, experimental repositories) and agent skills for common scientific workflows
- Collaborate with Applied AI Architects to maintain context across customer engagements
- Identify patterns across engagements regarding challenges in deploying AI in life sciences (heterogeneous data, auditability, trust) and feed insights back to Product, Engineering, and Research teams
- Create technical content including documentation, tutorials, and sample code for startup audiences
- Represent Anthropic across the life sciences startup ecosystem through hackathons, webinars, office hours, founder events, and research showcases
- Travel to customer sites for workshops, implementation guidance, and relationship building
You will work closely with Applied AI Architects, Account Executives, and Anthropic's Product, Engineering, and Research teams to help startups build at the edge of what's possible with Claude.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Deep experience in life sciences or biotech through research or industry work in genomics, drug discovery, molecular design, lab automation, or clinical development
- 4+ years of technical experience as a software engineer, ML engineer, research engineer, computational biologist, research scientist, or technical founder
- Production experience building LLM-powered applications (prompting, context engineering, agent architectures, evaluation frameworks, deployment at scale) OR track record of successfully applying AI to real scientific work in lab or research settings
- Experience with startups or high-growth companies and comfort working with founders and small teams that move quickly
- Strong technical communication skills: ability to translate complex AI concepts into architectural decisions and actionable implementation plans for both engineering and scientific audiences; ability to run technical workshops, hackathons, or developer-focused events
- Collaborative approach to cross-team work, ability to context-switch across scientific domains and use cases, passion for making powerful technology safe and beneficial
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education, training, and professional experience
- Field of study relevant to the role as demonstrated through coursework, training, or professional experience
