OpenAI's Applied AI Engineering team is seeking a senior engineer to work with strategic startup customers, helping them build and scale generative AI applications on OpenAI's platform. You will serve as a technical thought partner throughout the customer journey—from ideation through development, delivery, and scaling—working with some of the most innovative AI startups globally.
In this role, you will partner closely with startup customers to build novel applications on the OpenAI API, providing proactive technical guidance to maximize business impact and accelerate development. You'll experiment and prototype alongside customers, demonstrating practical use cases and best practices. You will synthesize customer feedback and deliver it to OpenAI's Product and Research teams, helping shape the platform's evolution. Additionally, you'll contribute to open-source resources, codify best practices, and publish materials that scale the function across the startup ecosystem. You'll build relationships within the startup community, serving as a trusted technical partner to both individual customers and the broader ecosystem.
You'll collaborate closely with Sales, Solutions Engineering, Applied Research, and Product teams, reporting to the Startups AI Deployment Lead. The role is based in OpenAI's São Paulo office with a hybrid work model (3 days in office per week). Relocation assistance is available.
Qualifications:
- 5+ years of experience as a software engineer, ML engineer, or equivalent; experience in a startup environment is preferred, and founder or founding engineer experience is highly valued
- Fluency in Spanish, English, and Portuguese
- Proficiency in Python and JavaScript with strong grasp of AI/LLM best practices
- Experience building and/or delivering prototypes on OpenAI's API platform
- Ability to proactively identify opportunities for maximizing customer business value through the OpenAI API
- End-to-end problem ownership and willingness to acquire missing knowledge to complete tasks
- Humble attitude, eagerness to help colleagues, and commitment to team success
- High-throughput operator capable of driving multiple concurrent projects with ruthless prioritization
- Passion for startups and belief in their potential to become large enterprises
