Anthropic's Beneficial Deployments team is seeking an Applied AI Engineer to support nonprofits, research institutes, academic medical centers, and public-sector funders in deploying Claude to address rare and neglected diseases where commercial incentives are limited. You will work directly with partner organizations on two primary focus areas: 1. Clinical Trials: Help partners design, review, and prioritize clinical trials using Claude. This includes drafting and reviewing protocols, developing statistical analysis plans, and identifying enrollment and operational risks. Many of these trials involve small patient populations, investigator-led or nonprofit funding, and limited operational support; Claude can help teams design better trials and accelerate site startup. 2. Drug Repurposing: Build and validate tools to identify new uses for approved, typically off-patent or generic medicines in rare and neglected diseases. Work with literature, omics data, and patient data to assemble evidence that helps partners decide next steps. Known safety profiles of existing drugs can enable good hypotheses to reach patients years sooner than developing new molecules. Key responsibilities include: - Partnering with trial teams to design, review, and prioritize clinical trials; drafting and reviewing protocols and statistical analysis plans; flagging enrollment and operational risks - Building and validating tools for drug repurposing using biomedical data sources - Creating reusable infrastructure (MCP servers for biomedical data, agent skills, benchmarks grounded in real clinical questions) that other institutions can adopt - Feeding learnings from field work back to product, engineering, and research teams - Embedding in partners' teams and building alongside their engineers, scientists, and clinicians You will need strong written and verbal communication skills to produce documentation that other institutes can use independently and results that clinicians trust. A scrappy mentality is essential—comfort with ambiguity, willingness to wear multiple hats, and determination to deliver results for partners. Anthropologic is a public benefit corporation headquartered in San Francisco, offering competitive compensation, optional equity donation matching, generous vacation and parental leave, and flexible working hours. The role operates under a hybrid policy requiring at least 25% in-office time, though some roles may require more. Visa sponsorship is available. Requirements: - Hands-on experience designing, running, or analyzing clinical trials, or finding new uses for existing medicines. Deep experience in one area required; experience in both is a bonus. Prior contribution to a regulatory submission for a trial is a plus. - Comfort with biomedical data: literature, omics, and real-world patient data (health records, registries, claims), ideally within secure or trusted research environments. - Strong engineering skills: ability to take an LLM-powered tool from prototype to production code and write evaluations to measure performance. - Experience working directly with external partners or customers in a technical role. - Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education, training, and professional experience in a field relevant to the role. - Years of experience will correlate with internal job level requirements.
