Abby Care is building an AI-native platform for family-led care, addressing America's growing care crisis by empowering over 50 million family caregivers with tools, training, and support. The company combines clinical oversight with AI-powered technology to help families deliver high-quality home care while improving transparency and outcomes across the healthcare system. As an Applied AI Engineer reporting to the Director of Applied AI, you will build AI-powered products and workflow automation that help caregivers, clinicians, and operational teams deliver better care at scale. You'll work on practical, high-impact problems including collecting and interpreting clinical documents, automating intake and prior authorization workflows, assisting caregivers and nurses, detecting operational or billing risks, and routing exceptions intelligently. You will contribute across the full development lifecycle: understanding underlying workflows, prototyping solutions, preparing datasets, building evaluations, implementing production systems, and learning from real-world usage. The role emphasizes moving beyond demos to build reliable, observable, and useful systems in consequential healthcare workflows. Key responsibilities include developing agents, copilots, and intelligent workflows; building backend services, APIs, data pipelines, and reusable AI components; creating systems that extract and reason over clinical documents and operational records; building representative datasets and measuring performance; partnering with Product, Design, Clinical, and Operations teams; and contributing to shared engineering foundations for orchestration, monitoring, and evaluation. Success means consistently shipping AI capabilities that solve real problems, progressing from prototype to reliable production, supporting work with clear evaluations and monitoring, using production feedback to improve quality, collaborating effectively across teams, developing reusable components, and growing ability to independently own complex projects while understanding when to use AI, deterministic software, or human review. This is a full-time hybrid role based in San Francisco with four days per week in-person. REQUIREMENTS: - 2+ years of professional software engineering, machine learning, or Applied AI experience, or equivalent demonstrated ability - Strong programming skills and software engineering fundamentals - Experience building applications using language models, machine-learning models, or modern AI APIs - Familiarity with backend development, APIs, data processing, testing, and production software systems - Ability to structure ambiguous problems, test assumptions, and iterate based on evidence - Interest in building evaluations and understanding why AI systems succeed or fail - Strong ownership, curiosity, and willingness to engage directly with users and operational workflows - Clear written and verbal communication skills - Must reside in or be willing to permanently relocate to the San Francisco Bay Area PREFERRED: - Experience with Python, agent architectures, retrieval-augmented generation, document intelligence, multimodal models, structured generation, model evaluation, monitoring, or prompt optimization - Experience in healthcare, fintech, insurance, another regulated environment, a startup, or an operations-intensive business
