OpenAI's Plugin Developer Platform team is seeking an experienced Android engineer to build mobile experiences for plugins, connectors, and interactive apps within ChatGPT. The team creates the APIs, SDKs, and tools that enable developers to extend ChatGPT and Codex, working on plugin creation and publishing, runtime systems, and open standards like the Model Context Protocol (MCP).
In this role, you will own the Android platform experiences that help developers extend ChatGPT and users discover and use those capabilities from their devices. You'll build native Android interfaces, developer-facing APIs, and systems supporting extensibility on mobile. Your responsibilities include:
- Building Android experiences for plugins, connectors, and interactive apps within ChatGPT
- Developing reusable Android components and interfaces supporting a growing developer ecosystem
- Partnering with platform engineers to connect native mobile experiences with APIs, SDKs, and backend systems
- Working directly with developers and partners to identify integration challenges and improve the mobile development experience
- Improving app performance, reliability, architecture, testing, and developer tooling
- Owning projects from initial requirements through release, measurement, and iteration
You'll collaborate closely with product, design, and platform engineers, and engage directly with external developers and partners to understand how their workflows translate to Android. This informs the interfaces, abstractions, and prioritization you drive.
The role is based in San Francisco with a hybrid work model of 3 days in-office per week. OpenAI offers relocation assistance to new employees.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Deep experience building Android applications using Kotlin and modern Android development frameworks
- Shipped consumer-facing mobile products at scale with demonstrated care for performance, quality, and user experience
- Platform mindset with ability to design reusable interfaces and abstractions for other developers
- Strong collaboration skills across engineering, product, and design; comfort working directly with external developers and partners
- Excitement about bringing AI-powered tools and extensible experiences to mobile
- Ability to thrive in fast-moving environments where you help define both product and technical direction
