Pulley is hiring a founding AI Operations Engineer to build tools, integrations, and automations that embed Pulley's permitting intelligence platform into customer workflows and internal operations. The role sits at the intersection of engineering, product, and customer success, with responsibility for both external customer integrations and internal process automation.
External Focus: You'll work directly with strategic customers (J.Crew, Solidcore, Hibbett Sports, data center operators, EV charging networks) to understand their rollout processes and build integrations, data syncs, and AI workflows that connect Pulley to their systems safely. You'll own data integrity and security throughout.
Internal Focus: You'll partner with the Permit Ops team to map workflows, identify automation opportunities, and build lightweight agents and tools that reduce manual research and administrative work. You'll ensure adoption and trust in what you ship.
Cross-Functional Responsibilities: You'll design evals and monitoring systems to verify AI workflows produce correct results (critical when wrong answers delay permit approvals). You'll convert one-off solutions into reusable tools and playbooks. You'll communicate directly with customers and internal stakeholders, and push back on requests that won't solve the underlying problem. As Pulley expands into due diligence and code checking, you'll work across all product lines.
The company was founded in 2021 and is backed by CRV, Susa Ventures, Fifth Wall, and leaders from Plaid, Segment, ServiceTitan, and Procore. Pulley addresses a massive market inefficiency: permitting is spread across 19,000+ jurisdictions with different rules and timelines, making it the slowest and most uncertain part of commercial construction.

- CS or adjacent technical degree
- Proven track record shipping AI-powered tools, agents, or automations in production (portfolio or examples strongly preferred)
- Daily fluency with AI coding and agent tooling (Claude Code, Cursor, or similar)
- Solid engineering fundamentals: APIs, data handling, reliable and secure systems, debugging unfamiliar code
- Direct experience working with customers or external stakeholders
- Based in San Francisco Bay Area; willing to work in-person 4 days per week
Nice to Haves:
- Construction tech, govtech, proptech, or similar domain experience (messy real-world documents and processes)
- Internal tools or ops tooling experience (Retool, n8n, Zapier, MCP connectors, custom)
- LLM eval design or production reliability experience
- Early-stage startup or founder experience
- Interest in building and eventually leading a team
