Epoch AI is a research institute investigating trends in machine learning and AI's economic consequences. They are seeking an AI Enablement Manager to lead their internal AI adoption and automation strategy, reporting to the COO.
The role has two primary dimensions:
**Automation & Systems**: Own Epoch's portfolio of AI automations—keeping production systems running, fixing issues, and retiring obsolete workflows. Build new automations for operations, communications, and research support by understanding colleagues' needs and involving them in testing and refinement. Prioritize projects by estimated value to the organization. Manage shared AI tools including Claude in Slack and integrations connecting it to company systems. Review emerging tools and models, recommend adoptions, and oversee AI tool spend. Maintain an automations dashboard and report regularly on workflow improvements, impact, and metrics.
**Enablement & Upskilling**: Help staff use AI more effectively through onboarding new hires, writing practical guidance, offering one-to-one coaching, and maintaining shared infrastructure (skills libraries, prompt libraries, tool integrations). Create a supportive environment where people feel comfortable asking basic questions. Ensure automations are well-documented and maintainable, with clear handover procedures and controlled access.
Epoch has been running this function since March 2026 with several dozen automations already deployed and significant Claude integration work completed. The successful candidate will expand and refine this program.
The role is fully remote with flexible hours between UTC+2 and UTC-8. Employees attend three in-person retreats annually at varying locations. Start date is flexible based on candidate availability.
**Requirements:**
- Extensive practical experience with AI: demonstrated ability to use coding agents to turn ideas into working tools, from initial problem through deployment. Comfort experimenting with new capabilities and judging their value.
- Systematic approach to building with AI agents: ability to translate needs into clear specifications, break work into manageable tasks, assess design trade-offs, and direct agents to implement solutions. Does not require personal coding ability.
- Product judgment: user-centered thinking, consideration of interaction patterns including edge cases, deliberate design choices, and focus on coherent, easy-to-use, purpose-fit tools.
- Resourcefulness and adaptability: comfort with unfamiliar problems, ability to learn new tools quickly, willingness to question initial approaches and find alternatives.
- Teaching and coaching aptitude: genuine enjoyment helping others become more capable, careful listening, ability to adapt explanations to experience levels, creating psychological safety for questions.
- Autonomy and reliability: self-directed priority-setting, follow-through without prompting, comfort working independently on problems.
- Mission alignment: understanding and sharing Epoch's mission in AI research and policy impact.
- Professional-level English proficiency required.
Software engineering background is not required. Candidates need not meet every criterion to apply.
