Legion is building secure, reliable AI systems trusted by government and enterprise leaders. Born from a Department of Defense partnership and collaborating with world-class partners like Palantir, Nvidia, HPE, and Oracle, Legion embeds intelligent capabilities into complex systems to unlock data, accelerate workflows, and strengthen mission-critical infrastructure.
We are seeking an Engineering Manager to lead a team building the platform capabilities and agentic AI applications powering Legion's products. This is a technical, player-coach leadership role spanning AI engineering, platform engineering, and product development.
You will lead engineers working across agentic workflows, tools and integrations, platform services, and the data infrastructure required to run secure and reliable AI systems in production. You'll partner closely with Product, Design, go-to-market teams, and other engineering leaders to translate customer and business needs into technical priorities while helping your team make strong architectural decisions and ship quickly.
Key responsibilities include:
- Lead, mentor, and grow engineers across agentic AI applications and platform systems
- Set expectations for team execution from early product concepts through production deployment and operation
- Partner with Product, Design, Platform Engineering, and go-to-market teams to translate customer problems into engineering priorities
- Establish strong engineering patterns for agent workflows, MCP and tool integrations, service design, APIs, deployment, and inter-service communication
- Guide architecture and engineering trade-offs, balancing rapid iteration with long-term maintainability and platform scalability
- Bring informed perspective to data infrastructure and data management for enterprise AI systems
- Remove blockers and improve engineering processes to enable rapid, high-quality delivery
- Stay close to the technology and contribute directly on architecture, prototypes, and complex initiatives
- Foster a culture of ownership, collaboration, experimentation, continuous learning, and low-ego technical decision-making
- Recruit, mentor, and retain exceptional engineers
REQUIREMENTS:
- 8+ years of software engineering experience, including significant experience designing and operating production software systems
- 2+ years of experience hiring, managing, and developing engineering teams
- Strong software architecture and systems engineering background with ability to guide technical decisions across application and platform layers
- Experience building or supporting AI/ML platforms or AI-powered products, including LLMs, AI agents, model serving, MCP, tool calling, workflows, or enterprise integrations
- Hands-on experience with cloud infrastructure, distributed systems, and container orchestration (e.g., Kubernetes)
- Strong technical judgment and ability to make pragmatic trade-offs between speed, simplicity, scalability, and maintainability
- Experience partnering with Product and other engineering teams to define roadmaps and deliver customer value
- Proven experience hiring, mentoring, and developing high-performing engineers
- Excellent communication skills and collaborative, low-ego leadership style
- Excitement for 0→1 product development at the intersection of AI infrastructure and customer-facing experiences
- US Citizenship or Green Card required due to US Government contract requirements
- Must be domiciled in the US (permanent residence with home address in the US)
- Must provide legally authorized identification for verification through CLEAR ID
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience working in Rust or leading teams in Rust-heavy environments
- Familiarity with AI evaluation frameworks, observability, and production systems
- Experience designing systems for the enterprise
- Background in startup or high-growth environments with rapid iteration
- Exposure to regulated or mission-critical industries (defense, healthcare, finance, telecommunications)
