Harbinger is an American commercial electric vehicle (EV) company developing innovative medium-duty EV and hybrid platforms. The company is seeking an Advanced Manufacturing Engineer, Powertrain to lead the strategic design, development, and implementation of highly automated manufacturing equipment and systems for Electric Drive Unit (EDU) assembly and electrified chassis integration.
In this critical technical leadership role, you will drive the strategy for high-precision, high-volume EV drivetrain manufacturing, ensuring production lines achieve world-class efficiency, safety, and robustness. You will serve as a hands-on technical expert guiding scale-up from concept through high-volume production.
Key Responsibilities:
- Define and implement long-term process and equipment strategy for EV Powertrain manufacturing lines, including precision CNC machining, winding, motor magnet assembly, component pressing, precision balancing, gearbox assembly, fluid filling, leak/pressure testing, and EDU End-of-Line (EOL) dynamometer testing.
- Lead full equipment lifecycle management: concept definition, Statement of Requirements (SOR), vendor selection, design review, Factory/Site Acceptance Testing (FAT/SAT), installation, commissioning, production ramp-up, and continuous improvement.
- Lead process flow planning, layout, and installation of new Powertrain assembly lines, managing utility integration (compressed air, specialized coolants/oils, high-voltage power) and automation cell integration.
- Serve as technical subject matter expert for all Powertrain equipment, applying deep knowledge of high-precision automation, servo control, torque control fastening, process control, and quality inspection systems (NDT, metrology, gear inspection).
- Lead Powertrain Product Engineering teams to optimize EDU and chassis component designs for automated assembly, focusing on minimizing complexity and maximizing process capability (Cpk).
- Partner with Tier 1 equipment suppliers on complex technical discussions, specification negotiation, and delivery/quality/performance targets.
- Drive continuous improvement through statistical process control (SPC), Design of Experiments (DOE), root cause analysis (8D), and rigorous process validation (PFMEA, Control Plans).
- Work cross-functionally with Product Design, Quality, Controls, and Operations teams to ensure successful project execution and seamless equipment integration.
Requirements:
- Minimum 10+ years of advanced manufacturing engineering experience, with at least 8+ years focused on high-precision Electric Drive Unit (motor/gearbox/inverter) assembly, ICE Drivetrain assembly, or highly automated chassis/sub-assembly manufacturing in automotive or related high-volume industries.
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or related technical field.
- Expertise in high-speed rotor/stator assembly, winding, precision balancing, or component pressing (bearings, shafts).
- Strong familiarity with precision liquid dispensing (sealants, thermal paste) and automated leak/pressure testing.
- Expert knowledge of Electric Motor EOL dynamometer testing and data interpretation.
- Proven history of bringing new, complex, highly automated manufacturing equipment online from concept to high-volume production.
- Strong proficiency in CAD software (SolidWorks, CATIA) for reviewing complex equipment designs and layouts.
- Proven project management experience leading multi-million dollar, large-scale equipment projects with critical safety and quality implications.
- Ability to perform rigorous statistical analysis and structured root cause analysis techniques.
- Willingness to travel domestically and internationally as required.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in startup environment and rapidly scaling production.
- Lean Manufacturing principles and Six Sigma methodologies (Black Belt preferred).
- Project Management Professional (PMP) or similar certification.
- Experience with simulation software (Delmia).
