Fluidstack is building civilization-scale compute infrastructure for AI at gigawatt scale. The company is rethinking every layer of the data center stack—from power acquisition and site design through operations—with a focus on speed and scale as key differentiators.
You will join the civil, structural, and architectural engineering team as the acoustics specialist, owning noise and sound management across Fluidstack's template-based data center designs and on-site power generation systems. This is a high-impact individual contributor role with end-to-end ownership of acoustic engineering across multiple gigawatt-scale projects.
Key responsibilities:
- Own and execute environmental and occupational noise studies and calculations for template data center and power generation designs, keeping models current as templates evolve.
- Build and maintain outdoor sound propagation models for each template, adapting them to candidate sites, terrain, and local noise ordinances.
- Specify acoustic mitigations (barriers, silencers, enclosures, louvers, equipment selection) that bring sites into compliance, with cost and schedule justification for each option.
- Collaborate across mechanical, electrical, power generation, and architectural engineering teams to integrate noise requirements early in design and review equipment selections for acoustic impact.
- Set occupational noise exposure limits for plant and yard work areas, define hearing conservation zones, and verify compliance at commissioning.
- Produce noise assessments, reports, and measurement data for permitting and community engagement, and respond to regulatory questions.
The team is working on problems including predicting property-line and community noise from data centers with hundreds of fans, chillers, and dry coolers; quantifying noise from on-site gas generation, transformers, and switchyards; developing repeatable mitigation products rather than site-by-site fixes; and maintaining occupational noise limits as equipment density increases.
Fluidstack operates with full autonomy, insane urgency, first-principles reasoning, and a focus on building infrastructure that matters. Long hours at high intensity are expected.
Requirements:
- 5+ years of acoustics or noise control engineering on industrial, power generation, or mission-critical facilities, with at least one project taken from study through permit and commissioning measurement.
- Fluency in outdoor sound propagation tools such as CadnaA or SoundPLAN and in the ISO 9613-2 method.
- Hands-on experience with environmental noise measurement, sound power and sound pressure data from equipment vendors, and octave-band calculations.
- Working knowledge of occupational noise standards such as OSHA 1910.95 and local noise ordinances governing industrial sites.
- Demonstrated experience specifying barriers, silencers, and acoustic enclosures and seeing them built and measured.
- Ability to explain acoustic trade-offs to mechanical and electrical engineers in their terms and hold the line on limits during design reviews.
- Bonus: INCE Board Certification or Professional Engineer license; data center or gas turbine plant noise experience; building acoustics or vibration isolation background; mechanical engineering or procurement experience.
