HappyRobot is an AI infrastructure company backed by a16z and Y Combinator (S23) that enables enterprises to build and orchestrate autonomous AI workforces. The company has raised over $150M and operates globally across multiple entities.
You will own the design and execution of HappyRobot's general ledger close, multi-entity consolidation, and operating-expense accounting from the ground up. This is a 0-to-1 role with significant autonomy—you will design the close calendar, reconciliation processes, and team structure rather than inheriting them. You will serve as a genuine thought partner to the Head of Accounting on GL and close policy, not merely an executor.
Key responsibilities include:
- Own the general ledger close end-to-end: design reconciliation processes, accrual workflows, and balance sheet reviews on a calendar that tightens each quarter as automation matures.
- Partner with the Head of Accounting on GL and close policy decisions, bringing judgment and strategic perspective.
- Actively identify and eliminate manual, repetitive close work using system automations and AI finance tools, with clear judgment about where automation is safe versus where human review is required.
- Build multi-entity consolidation and intercompany elimination processes across US, UK, Spain, and Brazil entities from scratch, including FX translation, CTA calculation, and intercompany elimination—systematized rather than manually rebuilt each quarter.
- Own OPEX accounting end-to-end: accrual processes for expenses incurred but not yet billed, prepaid amortization, and budget-to-actual variance analysis in partnership with FP&A.
- Own reconciliation between AP (Ramp) and payroll (Rippling) feeds and the GL, closing gaps that automated feeds don't catch.
- Build internal controls and reconciliation documentation standards for the first external audit and own the auditor relationship on GL-side requests.
The company values extreme ownership, craftsmanship, urgency with focus, and first-principles thinking. You will work in a hands-on environment where no task is too small regardless of title.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 6–8 years of progressive general ledger and OPEX experience, ideally including multi-entity or international consolidation.
- Finance engineer's mindset: you build scalable systems that reduce manual work and increase accuracy.
- Proven, hands-on experience using AI tools (Claude, ChatGPT, or similar) in day-to-day work; comfort picking up new automation tools quickly.
- Strong judgment about which accounting activities should be automated and which require human review.
- Solid understanding of foreign currency translation (ASC 830), intercompany accounting, and consolidation mechanics.
- Comfort operating with real autonomy and making GL policy calls independently.
- Clear communicator who can explain close mechanics to non-finance stakeholders without jargon.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field; CPA a plus but not required.
