Formlabs is seeking a Test Tooling Engineer to own quality and performance signal for PreForm, the company's flagship 3D printing software used by over 50,000 industry leaders including Apple, Google, Tesla, and NASA. This is a hands-on senior individual contributor role focused on building automated testing infrastructure and quality enforcement mechanisms.
Key responsibilities include:
**Performance Regression Detection**: Implement per-PR and nightly measurement of defined KPIs (startup time, upload, print generation, crash rate) in CI with automated alerting on regressions. This serves as the enforcement mechanism for PreForm's performance initiative.
**System Test Re-architecture**: Rebuild the systemtest layer to drive end-to-end scenarios headlessly through PreForm Server's Local API, aligning with the API team's direction.
**Customer-File Corpus Testing**: Build and own a pipeline that runs large batches of real customer models through slicing and support generation, diffing results against baselines to catch regressions on geometry customers actually print at scale manual testing cannot reach.
**Crash Intelligence**: Own Sentry triage, trending, and root-cause attribution. Build crash-reproduction harnesses to enable engineers to fix issues rather than investigate them.
**Test Infrastructure Stewardship**: Manage print regression baselines, CI flake, test runtimes, and golden-file management as a product rather than a tax on feature engineers.
You will work in a hybrid environment in Budapest with catered lunches, private health insurance, transportation passes, company equity, sports allowance, and a dog-friendly office.
**Requirements:**
- C++ proficiency: able to write integration and system tests against PreForm internals and understand mesh operations, print file generation, and slicing output
- Python for tooling and harnesses: corpus pipelines, API-driven test drivers, result diffing and reporting
- CI and automation depth: Jenkins, test parallelization, flake management, baseline/golden-file testing strategies
- Observability instinct: Sentry, Amplitude, crash and performance dashboards; ability to treat "is this release healthy" as a data question
- Mid-to-senior IC seniority: senior enough to define test strategy independently; hands-on enough to build it
- Strong plus: desktop application testing experience (GUI automation on Windows/macOS using Squish or Qt Test-based harnesses)
- Bonus: passion for 3D printing and emerging technologies; experience in fast-growing startup environments
