Scale AI is hiring a Tech Lead for the ARC (Architecture, Reliability, & Compute) team to lead backend infrastructure and deployment systems for the Public Sector Engineering organization. In this role, you will define how the company ships software into complex government and high-security environments, establishing deployment patterns and standards that go beyond basic infrastructure-as-code. You'll build and maintain internal CLIs and tools that standardize testing, deployment, and environment management, enabling engineering teams to prevent downstream issues and pay down technical debt.
Key responsibilities include designing and implementing secure, scalable backend systems for government customers leveraging Scale's cloud-native AI infrastructure; managing and mentoring team members while guiding technical direction; owning services and systems with focus on long-term health; re-architecting the stack to run in compliant or restrictive environments by designing swappable components (auth, storage, logging) that meet government mandates without breaking product functionality; collaborating cross-functionally to define backend solutions for government agencies in secure environments; participating in customer engagements to understand requirements and deliver solutions; and contributing to the platform roadmap and product strategy for Scale's Public Sector business.
Required qualifications include an active Secret clearance (non-negotiable). Ideal candidates bring full-stack development experience (front-end and back-end with modern frameworks and databases), with a plus for software delivery to air-gapped and isolated environments. Cloud-native expertise is desired, including containerization (Docker), orchestration (Kubernetes), and cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP). Security focus is critical: experience with Federal Compliance frameworks (Cloud SRG, FedRAMP, STIG Benchmarks) and developing solutions meeting strict security and regulatory requirements. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, excellent collaboration and communication abilities, and adaptability to new technologies are essential. Must be able to work 3 days per week from one of the four office locations (DC, SF, NYC, or STL).
