Rula is a mental health platform dedicated to making evidence-based, compassionate care accessible. The company is Series C-funded and remote-first, operating across most U.S. states.
You will join the Partnerships Referrals & Conversions engineering team as a Staff Software Engineer. This team owns the systems that manage patient referrals, partner integrations, and referral-centric patient experiences. Your core responsibilities include:
- Building and evolving scalable referral pathways and partner data management systems
- Designing durable system architectures that directly impact how partners refer patients and how those patients experience booking and care
- Bringing technical leadership to ambiguous problems, shaping direction and delivering software that moves the business forward
- Partnering with your Engineering Manager, product managers, designers, and other engineers to align technical decisions with business goals
- Mentoring engineers, unblocking peers, and raising the technical bar across the organization
- Leveraging AI-assisted development tools (Claude Code, etc.) as a core part of your workflow to improve velocity and time-to-value
You are expected to be product-minded, move quickly, and help the team identify and build the right solutions. You will work in a high-growth startup environment where you influence evolving roadmaps and navigate ambiguity.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 8+ years of professional software engineering experience
- Deep understanding of modern application design architecture, API design patterns, security, performance, and scaling
- Proven ability to design and evolve system architectures, weighing tradeoffs and selecting suitable approaches
- Demonstrated track record leading complex technical projects across teams, shaping scope, estimates, and execution while aligning technical decisions with business goals
- Excellent communication skills and ability to build positive relationships with partners and stakeholders
- Fluency with AI-assisted development tools (Claude Code, etc.) and ability to articulate where they accelerate delivery and where they introduce risk or require human judgment
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field (or comparable work experience)
- Familiarity with modern infrastructure and tooling
- Experience with distributed systems development, especially event-based paradigms
- Experience building systems to interface or integrate with third parties
- Comfort troubleshooting complex production issues and advocating for reliability improvements
- Prior experience in early-stage and/or high-growth startup environments
